Sourav Ganguly’s Big Advice to Gautam Gambhir

Date:

Everybody knows Gautam Gambhir brings a fiery edge to cricket. Whether he’s out there playing or running the show as a coach, that intensity drives him. Sometimes, though, it’s gotten him into heated exchanges — think about that spat with Virat Kohli during the IPL.

Sourav Ganguly, who captained India back in the day, weighed in on Gambhir’s approach. Ganguly believes Gambhir doesn’t need to be rough or rude; he already has what it takes. “He’s a competitor, always chasing victory,” Ganguly said in his chat with RevSportz. “Yeah, he can come off as rough, but deep down, he’s a solid guy. I’ve played alongside him — he wants to win, plain and simple.” Ganguly also gave Gambhir credit for focusing on the team, not just individuals, and trying to build an environment where everyone’s pulling together.

Lately, Gambhir’s made a bit of history. He became the first India head coach to win two big ICC trophies — the Champions Trophy 2025 and the T20 World Cup 2026. Still, Ganguly thinks Gambhir’s biggest challenge is looming: the 50-over World Cup in South Africa in 2027 and the real grind of Test cricket.

Ganguly puts it bluntly: “He’ll be really tested in South Africa with the white ball. The conditions there challenge everyone, but I trust he’ll figure it out with the team he’s got.” And on Gambhir’s progress with Tests, Ganguly says, “He needs to stop worrying so much about the wicket. In the England series, he couldn’t control the pitch, and you saw what happened. He doesn’t have to play on spinning tracks at home. Good wickets mean good results.”

Looking ahead, after the IPL in 2026, Gambhir’s got more on his plate. India faces Afghanistan and Ireland, followed by a tough white-ball series in England. The journey isn’t slowing down.
