If the morning in Shivajinagar was pleasantly cool at 17.8° C on Monday, the day was even better. The maximum temperature recorded at the Shivajinagar station was 33.1° C, which was 4.3° C below normal. It was the least warm April day in the last 10 years.
In Pashan, Chinchwad, Hadapsar and Wadgaonsheri, the maximum temperature was lower, in the 32° C range, while NDA recorded 31.8° C. Since 2015, when the maximum temperature recorded at the Shivajinagar station was 30.4° C, Pune has only seen temperatures climbing to 35-37° C in the month of April.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that there are two Western disturbances in quick succession that are, likely, to affect northwest India during the week with peak intensity on April 7 and 8. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Kashmir valley on April 7.
“When there is a Western Disturbance in the north, the winds blowing from these parts are cold and generally dry. The northerly winds are dominating our region at present, which is bringing down the temperatures a little,” says SD Sanap, Scientist at IMD Pune.
This phenomenon is responsible for bringing down the minimum temperature as well. Areas, such as Lavale and NDA, recorded a morning temperature of 15.8° C while Pashan and Talegaon were marginally warmer at 16.7° C. Hadapsar was the warmest locality with the minimum temperature reaching 20.7° C here while Chinchwad was a degree lower.
The summer heat will return very soon, in two or three days. That’s when the maximum and minimum temperatures will begin to increase by 2 to 3° C. According to IMD’s forecast, maximum temperature will reach 40° C in parts of Pune, such as Koregaon Park and Lohegaon, on April 11 as the skies remain clear.
The maximum temperature was below normal across the districts. The highest maximum temperature, in Wardha, was 38° C, which was 2.5° C below normal. The lowest minimum temperature was 13.9° C in Mahabaleshwar, which was 4.8° C below normal. Sanap says that, according to IMD’s monthly forecast, it looks like that temperatures will be below normal in April. “There might be five to six days when the temperatures are below normal, followed by one or two spells of warm days,” he adds.
