In a historic shift, ecotourism revenue has surpassed income from plantation crops for the Kerala Forest Development Corporation (KFDC), a state government enterprise. KFDC manages plantation crops, ecotourism, and eco-products across six divisions, employing approximately 500 workers and 100 staff members.

According to officials, during the last financial year, the KFDC earned Rs 11 crore from forestry crops, while total ecotourism generated Rs 14.75 crore. “For the first time, ecotourism income has emerged as the primary revenue source, sustaining the corporation at a time when it was poised for a year-end loss. This shift saved the KFDC,” said a senior KFDC official.
