A thrilling match at the Wankhede Stadium on May 4 between the home team, the Mumbai Indians, and the away team, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Hardik Pandya missed the match because of a back spasm, as informed by the Mumbai Indians. Suryakumar Yadav was the stand-in skipper for the team. Winning the toss, Yadav opted to bowl first.
Was it a wrong call? The question started to rise when Rishabh Pant’s batters, Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran, were in the crease, batting in the top gear. Bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah, Will Jacks, Deepak Chahar, and Allah Ghazanfar were rattled by the attacking approach of Marsh and Pooran.
A record-breaking innings for the Lucknow Super Giants
Later, Himmat Singh played an impactful knock as well to help the Lucknow Super Giants get a massive total of 228 runs in the first innings in exchange for 5 wickets. It was one of the highest totals recorded by the team in their IPL history.
In this innings, Rishabh Pant’s side smashed a total of 16 maximums, the joint second most by them in an innings. In those sixteen 6s, Nicholas Pooran himself hit eight 6s and three from Marsh’s blade.
LSG mostly dominated in the power play and between the 7 to 15 overs. In the power play, they claimed 90 runs, and in the following phase of the innings, it was 85 runs.
LSG kept dominating in the first innings
The batters of the Lucknow Super Giants were almost equally effective against both the Mumbai Indians pacers and spinners. According to the stats published by Cricbuzz, they bagged 108 runs in 10 overs in exchange for a couple of wickets. And against the spinners, LSG accumulated 120 runs in 10 overs in exchange for 3 wickets tonight.
All of these stats went in vain as the Mumbai Indians picked up a massive win. The 143-run partnership for the opening stand proved to be the decider for the match. For Mumbai, Ryan Rickelton played an 83-run knock, while Rohit Sharma, who came as an impact sub, got 84 runs.
Rishabh Pant was expecting more runs on the board vs Mumbai Indians
Rishabh Pant said, “Definitely, the way we started, I think we should have gotten more runs. But definitely some good signs. Can’t say that. Definitely the boys played freely, but in the end, I think they bowled well because they are used to these conditions, for sure.”
Rishabh Pant continued, “See, definitely, we were short 10-15 runs because it was a 220-230 wicket for sure. And the way we started, we had that edge over them. But at the same time, in a wicket like this, you can’t blame bowlers all the time. They’ve been doing a fantastic job for us. So definitely can’t say much to them, for sure. (what does the team need?) I think we need some good luck, man.”
“That’s the only thing I’m going to say. (how to find the luck?) Yeah, I think a lot of blessing is going to work around it. And it’s going to take some more effort from us, for sure.” Rishabh Pant, the captain of the Lucknow Super Giants, said after the match.
