Former India Women’s cricketer Veda Krishnamurthy has expressed concern over Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness due to his bad form in IPL 2026. She called on the Mumbai Indians think-tank to have a fully honest conversation with Bumrah and gauge not just his physical health, but his mental health as well.
Bumrah has been going through a patch that will easily be termed the worst of his career. His struggles have also contributed to MI’s problems this season. For all intents and purposes, the Mumbai Indians are out of IPL 2026 despite winning their last match.
Jasprit Bumrah not his usual self in IPL 2026
Jasprit Bumrah has taken 3 wickets in 10 matches at an average of 109.67, an economy of 8.89 runs per over, and a bowling strike rate of 74. These are horrendous stats for any bowler, let alone one of Jasprit Bumrah’s calibre.
At first glance, most viewers probably wouldn’t even believe that two-time T20 world champion Jasprit Bumrah was producing numbers like these in the IPL.
In MI’s latest match, Bumrah bowled 4 wicketless overs for 45 runs as MI turned Lucknow Super Giants’ target of 229 into a walk in the park.
Mumbai Indians snap three-match losing streak with win
For the second time in IPL 2026, Suryakumar Yadav filled in as captain for an injured Hardik Pandya for MI against Lucknow Super Giants at the Wankhede Stadium.
MI decided to field first, but the decision seemed to backfire initially. Mitchell Marsh got a great start while Nicholas Pooran set the ground on fire. Pooran shed his poor form and tonked 63 runs in just 21 balls.
Mumbai managed to pull things back near the end and limited LSG to just 228, a score that felt low considering the start Rishabh Pant’s men had.
Rohit Sharma returned from his injury layoff and was back to his smashing best. He put up 143 for the first wicket with Ryan Rickelton and both of them made in excess of 80.
Mumbai’s middle order had the match perfectly set up for them, and Naman Dhir made sure that LSG were the ones who extended their losing streak on Monday.
Do you want to take a break?- Veda Krishnamurthy
Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, Veda Krishnamurthy said that the responsibility to ensure Bumrah’s well-being fell on any/all friends he might have within the team. She said that senior figures like Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav needed to take this responsibility voluntarily.
“We are in that space that the management, or coach, or even captain – Surya is pretty close to him, he is the vice-captain of the squad – and Rohit is around, they can probably honestly sit and have a chat. Ask him: ‘Are you feeling 100% from within?’‘Do you want to take a break for a game or so?’ So that he comes back fresh. That is something you can probably ask him and expect him to answer you honestly.”
Former RCB head coach Sanjay Bangar was on the same panel and echoed Krishnamurthy’s thoughts. He said that if the MI management felt comfortable in accepting their fate and finishing near the bottom of the table, they should let Jasprit Bumrah take a call on whether the ace pacer wants to play the remaining matches.
