Sunrisers Hyderabad has made a massive statement by defeating the Chennai Super Kings in a must-win match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on May 18. With 16 points, the Pat Cummins-led side has secured their place in the play-offs of the IPL 2026 season, along with the defending champion Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans.
Traditionally, 16 points is considered the benchmark for qualification to the next round, and all three teams have the required points in their bags. As per the rules, only four teams will qualify for the play-offs.
Can CSK reach the IPL 2026 play-offs
So far, three teams have already confirmed their berths, leaving only one spot uncovered. For only one spot, multiple teams are in the race, including the Chennai Super Kings. Despite tonight’s defeat, CSK is still left with a thin chance to make its way into the next round of play. How could CSK enter the round of four after tonight’s defeat against the Sunrisers Hyderabad?
On paper, the equation is pretty clear, but hard to see in real life. According to the stats, from now on, CSK has no choice but to win the remaining group match, which will be against the Gujarat Titans. Ruturaj Gaikwad and his boys will have to make 2 points sure from this match. If they lose, their journey in the ongoing season will come to an end instantly. If they win, we will still have some hope.
In the end, NRR will be crucial
Though they will have to keep an eye on some of the other factors as well, including the Net Run Rate and the matches of the other teams. CSK will require Punjab Kings to lose their last match to the Lucknow Super Giants, and they will need to see Rajasthan Royals go down in one of their remaining two fixtures.
If these match results go in favor of the Chennai Super Kings, along with a win over the Gujarat Titans, then the Net Run Rate could decide their fate in the title contention. So, chances are still there for the former champions of the Indian Premier League.
SRH outplayed Chennai in all aspects of the match
SRH outplayed CSK in all departments in the 63rd match of the IPL 2026. The toss was on the favore of the home side, which was the Super Kings, but they could not utilize most from it as they suffered back-to-back blows inside the powerplay.
The quick dismissals of Sanju Samson and Urvil Patel were pretty costly for them. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was on the track for a significant amount of time, but he scored 15 runs, maintaining a strike rate of around 71.
Dewald Brevis and Kartik Sharma played some brilliant hands in the middle. For these two batters, Chennai was able to put a competitive total of 180 runs on board. Pat Cummins was lethal with the ball, taking three wickets.
SRH successfully hunted down the target because of the 70-run knock by Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen’s 47. SRH won the match by 5 wickets and one more over to spare.
