The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for Ahmedabad ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 final. Forecasts predict the possibility of rain and strong winds during the day, prompting teams and fans to keep a close watch on weather conditions before the title clash.
The IPL 2026 final between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Gujarat Titans (GT) is scheduled to be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, May 31. The highly anticipated match is set to begin at 7:30 PM IST. Both teams have won one IPL title each ahead of the upcoming clash.
IMD Forecast Raises Weather Concerns Ahead Of IPL 2026 Final In Ahmedabad
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rain and thundershowers at several places across Gujarat, including Ahmedabad. The advisory from Sunday morning to Monday morning has raised concerns ahead of the IPL 2026 final.
The IMD has also warned of strong winds in parts of Ahmedabad district. Wind speeds could range between 50 and 60 km/h in isolated areas, with thunderstorms likely to accompany the changing weather conditions.
The weather change comes after Ahmedabad experienced intense heat on Saturday, with the temperature reaching 43.1°C. Severe weather conditions in northwestern India also affected travel plans, as thunderstorms and heavy rain caused disruptions that delayed the Gujarat Titans’ arrival in Ahmedabad.
IPL Final Has Reserve Day And Extra Time To Counter Weather Disruptions
IPL officials have made it clear that their first priority is to complete the final on the scheduled day. To help achieve that, the IPL 2026 final has a two-hour extension window that can be used if rain or other weather interruptions affect play.
If a significant amount of time is lost, match officials can reduce the number of overs and use the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method to revise targets. Under IPL playing conditions, at least five overs per side must be completed for a result to be declared.
The tournament also has a backup plan in place, with June 1 serving as the official reserve day. A similar situation occurred during the IPL 2023 final, when rain forced the title clash between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings to be moved to the reserve day.
RCB Would Be Crowned Champions If Rain Washes Out Both Days
The IPL rulebook states that if persistent bad weather washes out both the scheduled match day and the reserve day, the final will be abandoned. In that situation, the team that finished higher in the league-stage standings will be declared champions.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru would be crowned IPL 2026 champions under this rule because they finished first in the league table, ahead of second-placed Gujarat Titans. RCB are the defending champions after winning their maiden IPL title last season, while Gujarat Titans won their only title in 2022.
Two teams will be hoping for a full match rather than a weather-affected result. Both teams are chasing their second IPL title, setting up a highly anticipated contest if conditions allow play to go ahead.
