Shubman Gill addresses T20I comeback prospects with India before IPL 2026 summit clash

Shubman Gill addresses T20I comeback prospects with India before IPL 2026 summit clash

As the massive cricketing world turns its eyes to the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the stage is set for a blockbuster IPL 2026 summit clash. On Sunday, the Gujarat Titans (GT) face off against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in a high-stakes finale. Amidst the intense team preparation and heavy tactical planning, GT skipper Shubman Gill has dominated headlines off the field. The stylish top-order batter, who has enjoyed an extraordinary run with the bat, recently addressed the burning questions surrounding his long-awaited return to India’s T20I setup.

Shubman Gill opens up on India T20I return ahead of IPL 2026 Final

Gill has been in sensational form throughout the ongoing IPL 2026 season. Serving as the primary engine of the Gujarat Titans’ batting lineup, the 26-year-old Punjab-born cricketer has amassed a staggering 722 runs across 15 innings at an exceptional average of 48.13. His masterclass was on full display in Qualifier 2, where he smashed a breathtaking 104 to guide GT straight into the final.

Despite being firmly established as Team India’s captain in both Test and ODI formats, Gill’s position in the shortest format of the game has remained under severe scrutiny. He last featured in T20Is during India’s home assignment against South Africa back in December 2025. Facing the media on the eve of the final, Gill confronted questions regarding his aspirations to put on the blue jersey in T20 Internationals once again.

The skipper was remarkably candid about his desire to play all formats without showing any signs of frustration. When asked directly about his roadmap for a national T20I comeback, Gill replied, “I’d be happy to play if I get picked for the T20 team. Honestly, I want to keep working on my game. I want to keep getting better as a T20 batsman, as an ODI batsman, as a Test batsman.” His mature response reflects a player focused entirely on self-improvement rather than selection politics.

High competition in India’s post-World Cup T20I blueprint

The narrative surrounding Gill’s T20I journey has been complicated. The national selectors initially pushed a transition strategy aimed at establishing Gill as an all-format bedrock. However, this move proved highly disruptive. His insertion into the top order forced the demotion and ultimate exclusion of wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson, breaking up Samson’s highly successful and explosive opening partnership with Abhishek Sharma.

Unfortunately, the strategic gamble failed to deliver results. Across 15 international appearances last year, Gill endured a severe slump in form, managing a meager 291 runs at a disappointing average of 24.25 without registering a single half-century. This dip in form resulted in him being omitted from India’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad.

In the wake of India’s global title defense, the race for a spot in the T20I blueprint has grown fiercely competitive. Samson has firmly consolidated his position at the top order through clutch performances on the world stage, while Abhishek continues to damage bowling attacks with his aggressive strike rate. Furthermore, Ishan Kishan’s impressive return to form and the sensational rise of 15-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who lit up the season with 776 runs, have completely transformed the selection dynamics.

While Gill’s spectacular 722-run IPL campaign has forcefully restarted the conversation about his T20I capabilities, his international future in the shortest format remains uncertain. Ultimately, the decision rests in the hands of the BCCI and the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee to determine if they will recall the elegant right-hander, who currently holds 869 runs across 36 T20Is at an average of 28.03.
