Three days after a woman was allegedly killed by her father in Kalyan in a suspected case of ‘honour killing’, the accused was arrested by the Bazarpet police on Monday.
According to Inspector Babasaheb Dukle, Vinod Vasaikar murdered his daughter Gayatri as he was angry over her inter-caste marriage. Mr. Vasaikar had fled the scene after the murder.
The Bazarpet police registered a case and launched a manhunt. Based on technical analysis and mobile location, they tracked and arrested him on Monday.
During interrogation, Mr. Vasaikar confessed to the crime. He told the police that he ended his daughter’s life as she had married a man from another caste, which he said brought ‘disrepute’ to the family.
Gayatri had married her boyfriend a few days ago, defying her family’s opposition. Her father had arranged two engagement ceremonies, both of which she refused. Mr. Vasaikar continued to harbour deep resentment towards his daughter, police said.
After her marriage, Gayatri came to her mother’s house in the Rachna Royal building for personal work. On the day of the incident, a dispute broke out between the father and daughter over the marriage. The argument escalated and Mr. Vasaikar took a sharp weapon from the house and stabbed Gayatri. She died on the spot.
The Bazarpet police are conducting investigation into the case.
