The TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 is over, and the players are busy with their respective international assignments. Amidst this, former Australia captain Michael Clarke, who has been an integral part of the commentary team during the IPL, has shared a horrifying story related to his life, which occurred after the IPL final between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and the Gujarat Titans (GT).
The 2015 ODI World Cup-winning captain, who was part of the commentary team in the final as well, revealed that he was involved in a serious road accident shortly after the final while he was on his way to the airport, describing the incident as a frightening experience, as he was grateful to have escaped with only minor injuries.
Front half of the car being under a truck- Michael Clarke on the accident
Michael Clarke was in a car as a passenger and revealed that the vehicle he was travelling in crashed into a semi-trailer and ended up partially underneath a truck. He shared this incident on his podcast named Beyond23 Cricket. “Interesting trip home, to say the least,” Clarke said on the Beyond23 Cricket Podcast. “Let me start by saying thank God for good people in India. That’s why I made it home safely.”
He described the whole incident, stating that he fell asleep after the final and suddenly woke up in shock after the car hit the trailer. “I was asleep. I fell asleep after the game, travelling. Obviously, I wasn’t driving. Then I woke up to virtually the front half of the car being under a truck,” Clarke revealed.
I got away- Clarke on how he survived
According to Michael Clarke, the driver later informed him that the truck’s brake lights were not working. “The driver explained to me that the brake lights on the truck weren’t working. So my driver had hit the truck up the backside. Again, it was a big semi-trailer and our car had gone underneath,” he said. “The car’s certainly written off,” he added.
Clarke was lucky to have escaped with minor bruises and did not have any major injuries. The former Australia skipper believed that the driver had broken his leg after the impact pushed against both their legs. “I got away with some bruises, but I definitely think he had a little break in his leg,” Clarke said.
BCCI and locals saved Michael Clarke
Michael Clarke added that the driver was shocked and worried because the vehicle belonged to the company he worked for. “I was really concerned because he was so scared. It wasn’t his car, he works for the company,” he said. Clarke advised him to seek medical attention and hoped he would eventually go to the hospital.
Later on, he thanked the local people and also the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for checking on him and also taking utmost care of the cricketer and also the driver.
“Everyone at the BCCI, everybody there, they’ve been checking in on him and they’ve been checking in on me. They’ve been unreal. So I’m very grateful for that,” he said. “It was a complete accident. These things happen all the time, but for me it was more the shock because I was fast asleep and then woke up to see myself so close to being underneath a truck.”
