BCCI confirms new skipper for Ireland, England Tour 2026

The BCCI has officially appointed Shreyas Iyer as the new T20I captain of the India National Cricket Team, with the Punjab Kings star set to captain the team during the upcoming tours of Ireland and England.

The appointment brings an end to Suryakumar Yadav’s stint as India’s T20I captain. While Suryakumar guided India to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 triumph in his last stint as skipper, the selectors have now turned to Shreyas Iyer, backing his leadership credentials and recent performances as they begin preparations for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2028.

Shreyas Iyer Officially Named India’s New T20I Captain

The BCCI’s decision to name Shreyas Iyer as the replacement for Suryakumar Yadav is a significant one, as the 31-year-old has not played a T20I match for India since December 2023.

Despite remaining a regular feature in IPL and international cricket, Shreyas struggled to break back into India’s T20I setup because of team combinations.

He has been consistently performing well in 20-over cricket for a while, and earlier this year, Shreyas Iyer was drafted into the T20I squad as an injury replacement during the home series against New Zealand.

However, he did not get a game as the management preferred players who were part of India’s plans for the T20 World Cup 2026 – a tournament in which Iyer was not selected.

The appointment of Iyer continues a new trend established by BCCI selectors, which sees an ICC trophy-winning captain being sacked. In 2025, Rohit Sharma was axed as skipper after leading India to the Champions Trophy 2025 title in March.

The current case, however, is slightly different as Rohit Sharma had remained part of the squad, but Suryakumar Yadav has been removed from the line-up.

Why Was Shreyas Iyer Chosen as India’s T20I Captain?

The biggest factor behind the decision is Shreyas Iyer’s proven leadership record. Over the years, he has established himself as one of the most successful captains in the IPL.

Shreyas led Delhi Capitals to the IPL final in 2020, guided Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL 2024 title and then took Punjab Kings to the IPL 2025 final, further strengthening his reputation as a leader.

His performances with the bat have been equally impressive. In IPL 2025, Shreyas scored 604 runs in 17 matches at an average of 50.33 and a strike rate of 175.07. He followed that with another outstanding campaign in IPL 2026, scoring 498 runs in 13 innings at an average of 55.33 and a strike rate of 168.81, including a century and five half-centuries.

His captaincy numbers are also among the best in IPL history. Across 101 matches as captain, Shreyas has led his teams to 55 wins, giving him a win percentage of 54.45. Those numbers, combined with his recent batting form, made him a strong candidate for the India T20 captain 2026 role.

What Shreyas Iyer’s Captaincy Means for India’s T20I Future?

Shreyas will begin his tenure immediately with the India T20I squad on the Ireland and England 2026 assignments. India will first face Ireland in a two-match T20I series in Belfast on June 26 and 28 before travelling to England for a five-match T20I series scheduled between July 1 and July 11.

The appointment also provides clarity regarding India’s long-term plans. Shreyas is expected to lead the team through the next T20 World Cup cycle, culminating in the 2028 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand from October to November 2028.

Apart from leading the side, Shreyas is also set to occupy a middle-order role previously associated with Suryakumar Yadav. In T20I cricket, Shreyas has played 51 matches and scored 1,104 runs at an average of 30.66 and a strike rate of 136.12. He has registered eight half-centuries, with a highest score of 74 not out.
