Accurate disaster prediction key to saving lives, says R.P. Sisodiya

Special Chief Secretary to Government, Industries and Commerce (Handlooms and Textiles), R.P. Sisodiya, said that accurate prediction of disasters is the foundation of effective disaster management, and it plays a crucial role in saving lives and reducing damage. Mr. Sisodia made the remarks while addressing Probationary Deputy Collectors undergoing induction training at Andhra Pradesh Human Resource Development Institute (APHRDI) in Mangalagiri on Monday.

Delivering a lecture on disaster preparedness and response, Mr. Sisodiya said that forecasting a disaster’s timing, duration and intensity enables authorities to plan the mobilisation of manpower, equipment and essential resources well in advance. He stressed that disaster management should focus as much on preparedness as on emergency response, with timely early warning systems and effective communication ensuring safe evacuation of vulnerable communities.

He said that prompt rescue, relief, rehabilitation and restoration efforts were equally important in helping affected people return to normal life quickly. Stressing coordinated action, he called for close cooperation among the Centre, State government, district administration and line departments during emergencies.

Highlighting technological advancements, Mr. Sisodiya advocated the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things, satellite monitoring, advanced telecommunications and drones for disaster prediction, real-time monitoring, damage assessment and relief operations.

Drawing on Andhra Pradesh’s experience in handling cyclones, floods and droughts, including the recent Vijayawada floods and Godavari Pushkaram, he underscored the importance of meticulous planning, coordination and resource management. The session was part of APHRDI’s 12-week induction programme for eight Probationary Deputy Collectors.
