After Kevin Pietersen, another English cricketer backs Jacob Bethell to pick IPL over County because of Virat Kohli

The debate around young England batter Jacob Bethell is heating up over his involvement with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the ongoing TATA Indian Premier League 2026 (TATA IPL 2026). The main reason behind this debate is that Jacob Bethell got only the first game of this season with RCB on April 24.

The English sensation warmed the bench during the first six matches of the RCB in the ongoing IPL 2026. This prompted the former England captain Alastair Cook to suggest that Bethell should go back to county cricket for more game time instead of warming the bench in the IPL.

Alastair Cook vs Kevin Pietersen over Jacob Bethell’s IPL 2026 stay

Alastair Cook felt match practice in England would help him prepare better for upcoming Test matches, with the team set to host New Zealand in a three-match Test series in June-July 2026. But former England star Kevin Pietersen felt Bethell is doing the right thing by staying in India.

Pietersen believes that being around top international players every day in the IPL is a huge learning experience for Bethell, even if he is not playing every match for the RCB. He also pointed out that training in such a high-pressure tournament helps young players grow faster.

Kevin Pietersen posted, X: “Alastair Cook has absolutely NO IDEA what it’s like to be in the IPL. What it’s like to always be around the best players in the world. So, his opinion on Jacob Bethell doesn’t matter at all. Stay in India, Jacob. I know, even though you’re not playing, you’re learning and will be a way better player.”

Kevin Pietersen gets support from Samit Patel in heated Jacob Bethell debate

The Englishman cited so many reasons why Bethell must stay in India and learn from the top-class players in the ongoing IPL 2026. Now, Pietersen got the support of his former England teammate Samit Patel in this debate, as he disagreed with Cook’s blunt take on Bethell.

He pointed out that Bethell is working under experienced coaches like Andy Flower and sharing the dressing room with legends like Virat Kohli, which gives him a rare chance to learn how top players think and prepare. Notably, Flower is currently serving as the RCB head coach, and he has already worked with the England cricket team in the position in the past.

Samit Patel was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail: “I’m with Kev. He’s still hitting balls, and he’s with the best coaches around the world. His coach is Andy Flower, who knows English cricket. Surely, Flower’s in his ear saying, “You’ve got a big test series coming up; do some work”.”

Don’t think its a bad thing: Samit Patel

The veteran all-rounder has stressed that county cricket can only give the match practice, but the IPL is giving Bethell exposure to world-class cricket every single day and intense match situations, which could shape his future differently.

Patel added, “Jacob Bethell’s experience in English cricket is not much; he’s not played that much county cricket, but he’s got one of the best batters ever, Virat Kohli, who he can just talk batting to, so I don’t think it’s such a bad thing.”
