Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are going through a major coaching shuffle ahead of the next Indian Premier League (IPL) season, and several names have started making headlines. Former England captain Eoin Morgan is reportedly one of the names in the discussion.
There have also been talks about changes in the five-time IPL champions’ support staff. Earlier reports suggested that Baba Indrajith could join CSK as a batting assistant coach next season in 2027. Earlier, Imran Tahir became the oldest player to take a five-wicket haul in T20 cricket.
However, the latest update has denied those rumours. Indrajith is now expected to continue playing for Tamil Nadu and is not looking to move into a coaching role at this stage.
Eoin Morgan emerges as frontrunner for CSK head coach role
Eoin Morgan has emerged as a frontrunner in the race to become Chennai Super Kings’ next head coach after they parted ways with Stephen Fleming, who has now become England’s Test coach. His name has been strongly linked to CSK, although there is no official word on the same.
Reports have claimed that Morgan is demanding around ₹18–20 crore for the head coach position, and even CSK are ready to pay that amount, but the final decision is still not official.
Michael Hussey has also been linked for the position, having already worked with the Chennai Super Kings in the past, but it has now been speculated that he is no longer in the race. Amid this, Mitchell Santner turns down a BBL deal to stay with New Zealand.
Baba Indrajith rejects CSK coaching role, set to continue as player
Baba Indrajith’s name had recently started doing the rounds for a possible role in CSK’s coaching setup. It was reported that Indrajith could join the franchise as the batting coach. But the latest update is that Indrajith wants to remain a player for Tamil Nadu.
At this stage of his career, he has no interest in moving into a support-staff position. The 32-year-old is expected to continue focusing on his playing career rather than immediately taking up a coaching role with CSK, as reported by the Indian Express journalist.

MS Dhoni set for new CSK role ahead of IPL 2027?
Amid the coaching changes, there is another major development around MS Dhoni. The CSK legend is reportedly likely to take up a mentor role, which would keep him with the franchise even if he decides to skip the upcoming IPL 2027.
The Chennai Super Kings star was retained by the team but missed the entire IPL 2026 season while recovering from injury. He later joined the squad towards the end and made an emotional appearance at Chepauk, where he took a lap of honour.
Now, the big question is whether Dhoni will return for IPL 2027. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has said Dhoni has not ruled out playing next season, while there is also talk of him taking up a mentor role. Recently, Subramaniam Badrinath said that if Dhoni does play, he would prefer to be the team’s full-time wicketkeeper rather than play as an impact player in the IPL 2027.
