Australian domestic cricket is set to create history later this year, with the Big Bash League (BBL) reportedly finalising plans to stage its first-ever match in India. The season opener is expected to feature Melbourne Renegades taking on Perth Scorchers at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium on December 12.
The proposal is in its final stages and is subject to a formal agreement between Cricket Australia and the Asian Cricket Council, as reported by Code Sports. The groundwork for the landmark fixture began in February when Cricket Australia officials Phil Rigby and Margot Harley travelled to India to explore the feasibility of hosting a BBL match on the subcontinent.
The discussions progressed further when a five-member Cricket Australia delegation visited Chennai to inspect the venue and assess logistical arrangements. The delegation arrived around the time Chennai Super Kings played their final home fixture of the IPL season.
During the visit, the Australian officials also held discussions with Mithun Manhas as preparations for the proposed fixture gathered momentum. The MA Chidambaram Stadium emerged as the preferred venue from the outset, with both the Board of Control for Cricket in India and the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) reportedly extending their support to the initiative.
Cricket Australia had initially explored the possibility of staging multiple Big Bash League matches in India. However, scheduling challenges have led the governing body to scale back those plans, with only the opening fixture currently expected to be played in Chennai.
Meanwhile, Tom Morris, an Australian journalist, has reported that Narendra Modi is expected to officially announce the historic fixture during his visit to Sydney between July 8 and July 10.
Despite the excitement surrounding the proposed match, Cricket Australia still faces several logistical hurdles. Travelling to Chennai presents a significant challenge, as there are currently no direct flights from Australia to the city. Players will likely travel via connecting flights through cities such as Delhi or Bengaluru, with the journey expected to take around 11 to 13 hours.
The travel schedule could also impact the remainder of the BBL season, as players will require adequate recovery time upon returning to Australia before resuming domestic commitments.
The timing of the match also remains one of the major talking points. Organisers are still weighing up whether the contest should be played as a day game or under lights. However, a daytime fixture is considered the preferred option from an Australian broadcasting perspective.
