Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have lost against the Mumbai Indians by 6 wickets in the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. This was a virtual do-or-die battle for both sides as they were bottom placed on the points table. Mumbai Indians hosted LSG at the Wankhede Stadium, without their regular captain Hardik Pandya, with Suryakumar Yadav leading the side.
LSG have now lost six games in a row, which has been a new low for the franchise, and they remain at the bottom of the table with four points after winning just two games and losing seven games. Rishabh Pant and the team will need to work things out as soon as possible, with five games in hand.
LSG qualification scenario explained
After this loss, the qualification for LSG looks grim, though not mathematically zero. After this loss, their losing streak continued and worsened their already poor net run rate (NRR), leaving them needing to win all remaining matches while depending heavily on other results. Coming to this match, both teams had the same points, but MI had one more game.
Now, after this loss, their NRR has hit back, though they sit with four points, but the Super Giants need to win all of the remaining matches and put their run rate on the positive side, as even with 14 points and a negative run rate, they will not be able to qualify for the playoffs.
They have a chance of reaching 14 points with one fewer game played than the Mumbai Indians. All remaining matches are treated as virtual knockouts from now on, and they must overcome a poor 2-3 home record at Ekana Stadium to stay in contention as they face RCB in their next home game.
Nicholas Pooran’s fifty goes in vain
Coming to the match, the Super Giants were invited to bat first, and they were off to a good start with their new opening combination in the form of Josh Inglis and Mitchell Marsh. Though the former could not trouble much despite the start was back for 13 runs.
Then a sensational 93-run partnership between Marsh and Nicholas Pooran gave LSG a solid position. The former scored 45 runs, and Pooran came back to form right on time, scoring 63 runs off 21 deliveries and helping LSG to eye a big total. But the flurry of wickets in the middle as they lost 5 wickets in the span of 43 runs.
Rohit Sharma show at the Wankhede Stadium
Aiden Markram and Himmat Singh made sure that the Super Giants go past the 200 run mark as they scored 31* and 40* respectively as the visitors finished with the score of 288/5. Rohit Sharma made a comeback in the side, and what an innings he played along with Ryan Rickelton to lay the foundation of the 229-run chase.
The two stitched a 143-run partnership for the first wicket and scored 83 and 84 runs respectively. Then it was small contributions from Naman Dhir and Will Jacks, which made the run chase easy as they were unbeaten on the score of 23 and 10 runs respectively, finishing the game with 8 balls to spare.
