Hundreds of auto-tipper drivers and sanitation workers from across Delhi gathered at Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital in East Delhi on Monday (August 17, 2026) to protest the killing of a 27-year-old sanitation worker in Kalyanpuri a day earlier.

Auto-tipper services remain shut across the city, with sanitation workers and drivers joining the demonstration to press for their demands. The victim’s family has not taken his body from the hospital, with protestors saying the last rites will not be conducted until their demands are met.

The protestors are demanding ₹1 crore in ex-gratia compensation for the family, a permanent job in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi for a member of the deceased’s family and action against Metro Waste, the private company that had engaged Anil Kumar.

At least 1,000 sanitation workers and other employees have gathered at the hospital with more joining.

Anil was stabbed while collecting garbage in Kalyanpuri at around 8.15 a.m. on Sunday (August 16, 2026). He was rushed to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The police have registered a case and identified the accused.
