Gautam Gambhir, the current Indian head coach, has often made headlines for his staunch personality and headstrong nature, which often lands him on the wrong side with both players and authority figures. Now, a former rival has made some bold remarks on the former cricketer’s egoistic nature and habit of bullying others.
Gautam Gambhir has been an intriguing character ever since his playing days for India. He has always been known as an engaging character on the field, and over the years in the IPL, he has had many ugly confrontations with his own Indian teammates who represent different franchises in the T20 league.
Despite his hotheadedness and his bold character, Gambhir has been remarkably successful in his career. Many have also praised his character as a captain and his unfazed attitude, even against the likes of the greats of the game. His remark of ‘ek chakke ne match nehi jitaya’ against MS Dhoni after the ICC World Cup 2011 win was a live example of his unfazed approach.
Delhi selector makes a massive revelation on Gautam Gambhir’s egoistic nature
Due to this boldness in his character, Gambhir has not once but on several occasions found himself involved in several controversial situations. During his playing days for Delhi, he had a massive confrontation with Atul Wassan, the then Delhi selector, after he accused the selectors of not having informed him about his removal from captaincy.
The former Delhi selector has now made a controversial claim during a YouTube live session, where he alleged that players are not always happy under Gautam Gambhir, who happens to be a bully at times and often hurts others with his egoistic nature.
“I have known him personally since he was a child. I have had my issues with him. With him, it’s about my way or the highway. He is like that, and he would bully a lot, even in Delhi cricket. His nature is only like that. From the start, he was from money, that nature only, an excellent player, and he is intelligent. His ego is on a different level,” said Wassan in a recent YouTube show with Vickey Lalwani.
He added that Gambhir believed that his words were ultimate, and if you don’t fall in line with them, then you will have to bear the consequences. However, he also agreed that it might be due to this nature of his that he has achieved so much in cricket.
“That’s why he is confronting Kohli” – Real reason behind Gautam Gambhir’s clash with Virat Kohli revealed
Atul has never decided to hold back whenever he speaks against Gautam Gambhir, which might be the result of their long-lasting rivalry since the latter’s playing days. Alongside revealing his egoistic side, he also revealed that Gambhir has always been a bully.
He also observed that this might be one of the reasons that he often indulges in confrontations with another alpha male character in that Indian team, Virat Kohli. The ex-selector also claimed that it boosts Gambhir’s spirit, since he has always been a fighter and hates to give up on anything.
“The player he became is because of his nature. He couldn’t give his best unless he fought. He probably goes and fights with the glass in his home. He likes putting himself in the mood. But he doesn’t retire; he needs to get off this horse. He thinks this still drives him. That’s why he is confronting Kohli: over-aggressiveness and an alpha-male kind of personality from Delhi. He has lost and has also won,” he added.
Atul Wassan drops a bombshell on Gautam Gambhir; claims players dislike him in the India camp
The final bombshell was yet to come for the Indian coach, whose coaching role has already been endangered with India’s poor stint in red-ball cricket in recent times and the ODI series defeat against New Zealand at home. The only positive for him has been the T20 World Cup triumph.
He revealed, “I am sure that all the players cannot be in a happy place. Somebody will be sleeping on needles; this happens. Personal likes and dislikes, and that too with such a strong personality. With personal likes and dislikes, and leading them with a stick, if you keep on winning, then it’s fine. But if you lose, then you need to listen to criticism.”
Despite being pressed for the names of the players who dislike Gautam Gambhir in particular, the former Delhi selector claimed that he knows a bunch of them but cannot take their names on the show. Also, cricket is a team sport, and nobody will listen to players if the coach wins even without those players.
