A two-day Faculty Development Programme (FDP) titled ‘Be a great mentor to be a good teacher’ commenced at the Vidyavardhaka College of Engineering (VVCE) in Mysuru on Friday with the aim of equipping newly recruited faculty members with effective mentoring and learner-centric teaching skills.

The programme has been organised by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) to strengthen mentoring capabilities and enhance teaching competencies among the newly inducted faculty.

Logasakthi Kandasamy, associate professor, School of Business, RV University, Bengaluru, inaugurated the programme in the presence of B. Sadashive Gowda, Principal, VVCE, Shobha Shankar, Vice-Principal and Dean (Academic Affairs), and Divya C.D., associate professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and IQAC coordinator.

Addressing the participants, Mr. Kandasamy stressed the vital role of mentoring in shaping students’ academic, professional, and personal development. He highlighted that an effective mentor should possess empathy, strong communication skills, leadership qualities, and the ability to provide constructive feedback.

He also explained the distinction between mentoring, teaching, and coaching, underscoring the unique responsibilities of a mentor in guiding students beyond academics.

The inaugural session marked the beginning of a series of interactive sessions that focus on effective mentoring practices, learner-centric teaching methodologies, professional ethics, and the qualities of an inspiring educator. Through practical examples and engaging discussions, the resource person encouraged faculty members to build meaningful mentor-mentee relationships that promote critical thinking, confidence, and lifelong learning.

IQAC coordinators from various departments and newly appointed faculty members participated in the programme.
