‘If Prithvi Shaw has gone through rehab and is sober…’

Delhi Capitals (DC) secured the service of Prithvi Shaw for a base price of only INR 75 lakh in the players’ auction ahead of the IPL 2026 season. In the ongoing campaign, the franchise is struggling with its batting combinations.

They have also tried out multiple opening pairs to stabilize things. The team is still in the title race and could also enter the play-offs. But, despite gaining a bunch of wins and some closely fought matches, DC’s performance is not convincing yet, mostly because of their inconsistency.

Why should DC trust in Prithvi Shaw?

The team is filled with a lot of talent and potential, but most of the part of it remains untouched. In search of an ‘X’ factor, the team management keeps its trust in some of its emerging batters and has done some shuffling in the batting order as well. As the team is struggling with their opening pair as well as their top order, why don’t they utilise a talent like Prithvi Shaw, who has been warming the bench from the beginning of the season? A part of the Indian cricket fans have raised the question.

The opening pair of Pathum Nissanka and KL Rahul has played some good knocks together for the team. But, mostly, instead of performing steadily as a combination, they showed their individual brilliance in some games. Nissanka or Rahul are not among the explosive batters in the league. Rahul has increased his strike rate and can play while maintaining a fast pace. But he is not an ‘X’ factor.

The opener has been trying to make a comeback

Prithvi Shaw is among the batters in the squad who could bring some freshness to the line-up. In the past, when Prithvi Shaw was an emerging cricketer, the Mumbai-born opener was considered one of the most exciting talents on the planet. But due to inconsistency, injuries, and mostly a debatable lifestyle gradually took him away from the limelight. As he grows more mature, the 26-year-old has realized the mistakes he has made and is keen on making a comeback.

“I am a human being; I will make mistakes. Obviously, whatever is written or spoken out there, they know only half of it. My family knows me… My friends know in and out about me. In social media or in the papers, whenever good or bad things used to come [about me], I was very young [to understand them], obviously. Every time you see [such stuff], you come [back for more]. So I stopped seeing them,” Prithvi Shaw said this after joining Delhi Capitals for IPL 2026.

Ex-India cricketer asks DC to play Prithvi

Former Team India cricketer Laxman Sivaramakrishnan believes that Prithvi deserves to get another chance if he has gone through Rehab and is sober now.

“The picture of Prthvi Shaw makes me feel very sad. Alcoholism is a genetic disease. It needs treatment. If he has gone through Rehab and is sober now, he needs to be given a few chances. One feels insecure after rehab. He will be eager to do well, sidelining him, frustration not good,” Laxman said this on ‘X’.
