Breaking news: India’s star player could miss the fifth T20I against West Indies.
The India–West Indies series has taken the excitement to another level. India won the opening T20I, but West Indies responded strongly by winning a high-scoring second match in which they crossed 250. India regained the lead with a strong batting performance in the third game, only for the visitors to hit back again.
In the fourth T20I, West Indies piled up 247 runs, and India could not complete the chase. The series now stands at 2-2, setting up a fifth-match decider.
India need their best players available for such a contest. However, the bowler who has looked their strongest pace option in this series could be missing when they need him most.
Arshdeep Singh’s Injury Raises Concern Before Decider
Arshdeep Singh could miss the fifth T20I after suffering a painful blow near his shoulder from a Shamar Joseph bouncer in the fourth match.
The injury occurred late in India’s chase. Arshdeep was visibly uncomfortable and eventually left the field without being able to continue his innings.
Joseph’s approach also drew criticism, with questions raised over his decision to keep bowling short at a lower-order batter when India had little realistic chance of winning.
For India, though, the immediate concern is the condition of Arshdeep’s bowling arm and whether he can recover in time for the final match.
Medical Assessment to Decide Arshdeep’s Availability
Sanju Samson’s update after the match offered hope of a recovery but no certainty over Arshdeep’s participation. He said the pacer was applying ice to the affected area and expressed hope that he would recover soon.
CricInformer understands that Arshdeep is being sent for a medical assessment, with the findings expected to guide the decision on his availability.
The approach is to avoid taking a risk. If playing could worsen the injury, or if he is unable to bowl at full fitness, India are prepared to leave him out.
A series decider is important, but rushing him back for one match could create a much longer problem. His ability to bowl comfortably will matter more than simply being available for selection.
There is no official confirmation that Arshdeep has been ruled out. However, the possibility of him missing the fifth T20I remains a serious concern.
Why His Absence Would Be a Major Blow for India
Arshdeep has looked the most effective fast bowler across the two teams in this series. His control and ability to deliver under pressure have made him especially valuable in a contest where the batters have repeatedly dominated.
His potential absence would also come at a difficult time for India’s pace attack. Jasprit Bumrah is unavailable, while Harshit Rana has already suffered an injury. Losing Arshdeep as well would further weaken a bowling group that has struggled to contain West Indies.
The visitors have twice shown how heavily they can score. Without their leading pace option, India would have fewer reliable answers against a batting unit entering the decider with confidence.
The medical assessment is now the key next step. It will help determine whether Arshdeep can take the field or whether India must prepare for the series finale without him.
