India’s defeat against West Indies despite scoring 249 runs has raised serious questions about the team’s bowling performance. However, the biggest mistake may not have been made by the bowlers at all. It was India’s decision to overlook Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a young batting sensation who could have made a massive difference on such an exceptionally batting-friendly surface.
At first, this argument might sound surprising. After all, India scored nearly 250 runs in just 20 overs. How can anyone blame the batting unit after such a performance?
But that is exactly where we need to understand the nature of the pitch and what India actually needed to win this match.
A Strike Rate of 200 Was Not Enough on This Pitch
If you believe that scoring at a strike rate of 200 was enough on this surface, you are making a serious mistake.
Just look at Shai Hope’s batting performance. The West Indies captain smashed 102 runs off just 45 deliveries at an extraordinary strike rate of 226.67.
Now understand what this actually tells us about the pitch.
Shai Hope is generally known for batting at a strike rate of around 150–170, even on batting-friendly surfaces. But if a batter like Hope can suddenly score at a strike rate of 226.67, just imagine how ridiculously easy the conditions were for batting.
If Shai Hope could bat at 226, then naturally, more explosive batters had the opportunity to score at 250 or even 300 on this surface.
And this is exactly where India missed Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
He has already proved in the IPL that he possesses the extraordinary ability to bat at strike rates of 250–300 or even higher. Unlike many explosive batters, he has also demonstrated remarkable consistency while maintaining such an aggressive approach.
Just imagine what Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could have done on this absolute batting paradise against this West Indies bowling attack.
That is the kind of extraordinary advantage India missed by keeping him out of the team.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Has Already Proved He Can Bat at 250–300 Strike Rate
The most frustrating part is that India already have a batter capable of producing exactly the kind of innings required on such surfaces.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s IPL 2026 numbers are almost unbelievable. The teenager scored 776 runs in 16 matches at an average of 48.50 and a staggering strike rate of 237.30.
Think about those numbers for a moment.
Maintaining a strike rate above 200 is difficult enough. But scoring 776 runs at a strike rate of 237 while averaging almost 50 throughout an entire IPL season is something extraordinary.
And these are not just numbers built around one or two explosive innings.
Sooryavanshi has already demonstrated his ability to score at 250, 300 and even higher strike rates against IPL bowling attacks.
More importantly, he has combined this extraordinary aggression with remarkable consistency throughout the tournament.
That is what makes him different.
Imagine What Vaibhav Could Have Done Against This West Indies Bowling Attack
Now imagine Vaibhav Sooryavanshi batting on the same Ranchi surface where Shai Hope scored at a strike rate of 226.67.
If Sooryavanshi can consistently dominate IPL attacks at such extraordinary scoring rates, what could he have done against this West Indies bowling attack on a pitch offering almost nothing to the bowlers?
The destruction could have been unimaginable.
On a two-paced surface, where other batters struggle to score freely, Sooryavanshi has the ability to attack at close to 200. Give him a completely flat batting track, and he has already shown the calibre to go beyond 250 or even 300.
This is the extra advantage India missed.
A batter scoring at 200 might appear to be doing an exceptional job. But when the conditions are so favourable that even 249 cannot be defended, India need someone who can push those limits further.
Sooryavanshi could have taken full advantage of the powerplay and put West Indies under tremendous pressure from the beginning.
India finished with 249. With Vaibhav’s extraordinary hitting ability at the top, a total of 270 or even 280 was a genuine possibility.
Those additional 20–30 runs could have completely changed the match.
Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma Cannot Match Vaibhav’s Consistency
There is no doubt about the extraordinary batting talent of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma.
Samson can produce breathtaking innings, while Abhishek has the ability to destroy bowling attacks when he gets going.
But the biggest problem with both players has been consistency.
They can produce an extraordinary performance in one match and then struggle to deliver the same impact regularly.
That is where Sooryavanshi stands apart.
His IPL 2026 campaign demonstrated that he does not need to sacrifice consistency to maintain an unbelievable scoring rate.
A batter who averages 48.50 while striking at 237.30 across an entire IPL season is offering something that even established international stars struggle to deliver.
And when India play on exceptionally flat surfaces, that combination of consistency and explosive batting becomes even more valuable.
Why Is Team Management Still Ignoring Vaibhav Sooryavanshi?
The biggest question is why the Indian team management continues to overlook such an extraordinary talent.
Sooryavanshi has already proved his ability in the IPL. He has dominated bowling attacks, produced extraordinary innings and maintained a level of consistency that is almost impossible to imagine at such a high strike rate.
What more does he need to do to earn an opportunity?
India have a batter who can potentially turn a 240-run total into 270 or 280 on a flat pitch, yet he continues to wait for his chance.
The defeat against West Indies has exposed exactly why this decision could be so costly.
It is easy to blame the bowlers after conceding 250 runs. But when the pitch offers virtually nothing to them, the responsibility falls on the batting unit to exploit the conditions beyond the ordinary.
India had the opportunity to introduce a batter who has already shown that he belongs to a different class on such surfaces.
Instead, they left him out.
And after watching West Indies chase down 249, the question becomes impossible to ignore: How much longer will India continue to overlook Vaibhav Sooryavanshi when he has already proved that he can offer something extraordinary?
