Fresh off winning the gold medal at the Asian Games, Team India shifts focus to a five-match home T20I series against the West Indies. The opening clash takes place at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. With head coach Gautam Gambhir back at the helm alongside captain Shreyas Iyer, selection debates are heating up over who makes the final team and who has to sit out.
India Playing 11 vs West Indies: The Opening Dilemma
The most intense competition in the squad is at the top of the order. Abhishek Sharma is an automatic choice as one opener, but deciding his partner is giving the team management a major headache. The race is down to seasoned wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson and 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
During the Asian Games, Samson struggled on slow and turning pitches, managing scores of just 2, 7 and 9. On the other hand, young Sooryavanshi seized his chances on those sluggish tracks, producing a quick 38 off 21 balls in the semi-final and a brisk 15 off eight deliveries in the final. Despite the teenager’s adaptability to tricky surfaces, Gambhir’s return as coach heavily tilts the scale back toward Samson.
Gambhir has consistently backed Samson, who recently delivered a match-winning 57 off 22 balls against Afghanistan. With the Lucknow surface expected to offer better batting conditions, Samson is likely to get the nod to open with Abhishek Sharma. Sitting Sooryavanshi out after his impressive cameos will be injustice to his talent.
A Settled and Powerful Middle Order
While the opening combination features heavy debate, India’s middle order from No. 3 to No. 6 looks rock solid. Ishan Kishan will slot in at No. 3. Kishan has been India’s top run-getter in T20I cricket this year and is batting in red-hot form.
Captain Shreyas Iyer will walk in at No. 4 to anchor the innings. Having successfully led India to gold in Japan, Iyer provides stability and authority against spin and pace alike. He will be followed by Tilak Varma at No. 5 and power-hitter Shivam Dube at No. 6. This settled unit gives India explosive firepower alongside solid match-winning pedigree.
All-Round Balance: Nitish Kumar Reddy vs Naman Dhir
The No. 7 slot presents an intriguing tactical battle between two promising all-rounders: Nitish Kumar Reddy and Naman Dhir. Dhir was recently added to the T20I squad after Washington Sundar was released for red-ball preparation.
If the Lucknow track shows extreme turn and demands an additional off-spin option, Dhir could force his way into the team. However, the management is far more likely to prefer Nitish Kumar Reddy as a seam-bowling all-rounder to provide balance alongside the specialist pacers. Reddy offers dependable batting depth and reliable overs of medium pace.
Bowling Attack: Kuldeep Yadav Returns, Prince Yadav Gets the Nod
Axar Patel remains India’s most reliable all-format performer and will lead the spin department from the No. 8 position. For the wrist-spin slot at No. 9, Kuldeep Yadav is expected to start. With Varun Chakaravarthy sidelined by injury, Kuldeep edges ahead of Ravi Bishnoi. Bishnoi struggled for control on turning pitches during the Asian Games, making Kuldeep the frontline choice.
With Jasprit Bumrah rested for this series, Arshdeep Singh will spearhead the fast-bowling unit at No. 10. The final spot at No. 11 comes down to a face-off between two young speedsters: Prince Yadav and Mayank Yadav.
India plans to use a rotation policy across the five matches, meaning both pacers will get game time. For this opening fixture, Prince Yadav is favored to start ahead of Mayank Yadav. Prince has been traveling consistently with the Indian white-ball group since the England tour and possesses match sharpness. Mayank Yadav, while possessing searing pace, is likely to be eased in later in the series.
