Date:

iOS 26.4 is starting soon and bringing one many new featuresincluding three new ways to customize your iPhone. Here’s what’s new.

#1: ‘Reduce Bright Effects’ reduces the bright design element

If you’re not a fan of iOS 26’s Liquid Glass design, the best option to dial it back is the ‘Tinted’ option that already exists in Settings ⇾ Display & Brightness ⇾ Liquid Glass.

But if you want to take things even further, there is one the new “Reduce bright effects” setting. on iOS 26.4.

The toggle can be found under Settings ⇾ Accessibility ⇾ Screen and text size. Enabling it will, according to Apple:

Minimize highlighting and flickering when interacting with on-screen elements, such as buttons or the keyboard.

You can see examples of the difference it makes here. Whether you like Liquid Glass or not, you may prefer the Reduce Bright Effects setting.

#2: Automate various iPhone battery charging limits

Your iPhone includes a battery feature called ‘Charge Limit’. This allows you to set a maximum charge limit that is anywhere from 80-100% of the battery’s maximum capacity.

The idea behind the feature is that using a lower charge limit can extend the life of your battery.

In iOS 26.4, Apple has added a new skill to customize iPhone charge limit through automation.

Apple’s Shortcuts app now has a “Set Battery Charge Limit” action. This can be used in all kinds of simple or complex shortcuts.

But one of its most powerful use cases is through the Shortcuts Automation feature. Once you create a shortcut with the new charge limit action, you can automatically charge your battery at different levels based on factors like whether you’re at home or away, on Wi-Fi or using 5G, and more.

#3: Customize video caption styles

Default video player in iOS 26.4 gains a new option: ability to customize subtitle style.

Whether you’re watching videos in Safari, the Apple TV app, or any other app that supports the default player, you’ll now see a Style option in the Subtitles menu.

Available styles include:

  • classical
  • Large text
  • Text outline
  • Transparent background

There’s also a “Manage Styles” button that lets you customize the appearance of subtitles even further. It takes you to the accessibility settings menu, where the subtitle style options used to be hidden.
