Samson, the World Cup winner, was looking dangerous and well-set on 48, threatening to take the game away from the visitors.

Tyagi, steaming in with a rhythmic run-up, unleashed an absolute thunderbolt clocked at 148.1 kph. The delivery was a masterclass in pace bowling: zipped in full, targeting the corridor between middle and off-stump. Samson, attempting to create room and play a square-cut to maintain his strike rate, completely lost his shape. The sheer velocity of the ball defeated the batter’s hands; Samson indulged in a fresh-air shot as the ball tailing in slightly shattered the woodwork. The rattling of the stumps silenced the home crowd momentarily, marking a massive breakthrough for KKR and ending a brilliant knock from the CSK opener.

CSK put up a formidable total against KKR despite disciplined KKR bowling

Despite the loss of Samson just short of his half-century, the Chennai Super Kings managed to post a daunting total of 192/5 in their allotted 20 overs. After KKR won the toss and chose to field, CSK’s strategy was clear: attack from the onset. The Powerplay was a blitzkrieg, with the hosts racing to 72 runs for the loss of two wickets in the first six overs.

The innings was set in tone by captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, who, despite being the first to fall for 7, allowed the young Ayush Mhatre to explode. Mhatre’s 38 off just 17 balls (including six fours and two maximums) set the stage. Following the early fireworks, Samson’s 48 off 32 balls (SR 150.00) and Dewald Brevis’ gritty 41 off 29 balls kept the scoreboard ticking.

KKR’s bowling unit had a mixed day. While Sunil Narine was his usual economical self, conceding only 21 runs in 4 overs, and Tyagi finished with impressive figures of 2/35, others like Vaibhav Arora struggled under the assault, conceding 55 in his 4 overs. A late flourish by Shivam Dube (13*) and Jamie Overton (7*) pushed the projected score past the 190-mark. CSK heads into the second innings with a slight edge in what promises to be a thrilling chase for the Knight Riders.
