Aakash Chopra has highlighted several qualities that could help Zaheer Khan in his new role as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027. Zaheer was appointed to the position on a one-year contract, with the former India pacer taking up his first professional head coaching role.
Zaheer brings considerable experience from both his playing career and his work in team management after retirement. The former India pacer represented India in 92 Tests, 200 ODIs and 17 T20Is and was part of the 2011 World Cup-winning side. He has also worked in cricket operations and mentoring roles with IPL franchises.
Aakash Chopra praises Zaheer Khan’s man-management skills
After Stephen Fleming‘s departure, Chopra believes Zaheer’s ability to understand and handle players could be one of his biggest strengths as a coach. He pointed to the former pacer’s willingness to support players, give them time and work alongside them rather than simply putting pressure on them. Chopra also explained why understanding the pressures faced by players and the expectations of the administration can be important for a coach.
“He is good at management. I mean, he knows how to handle people very well. He knows who to put his hand on, who to give a little more time. Once again, good work ethics. If he feels that this guy has worked a little less, then he is ready to stand with him, that I am there, come with me. You live with me, I live with you. We both live on the field, we work together. If you understand the expectation of the administration and the pressure of the players on the team, if you understand the pressure of playing, then you can draw a very fine line. Or you can say that you can work very well,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

Zaheer Khan’s understanding of the game could help him
Chopra further praised Zaheer for standing up for players and highlighted his tactical understanding of cricket. He believes Zaheer’s experience at the highest level gives him an understanding of what players go through on the field. Chopra also pointed to Zaheer’s quiet approach and focus on processes rather than the spotlight.
“One more thing that I like about him is that he stands up for players. He is not someone who will bully them. I think he will work very well with Chennai. Because he understands the game, understands cricket, tactically also understands the game. He is not the one who comes to the forefront and takes the limelight. He sits in the background. He will stay in the background, he will keep working quietly, he will focus a lot on the processes. Process, process, Mahi, Zaheer. I think the philosophy is right and similar. So, I think it’s going to work very well,” Chopra concluded.
