Team India have received a major update ahead of the fourth T20I against New Zealand, but it also leaves them with a difficult selection call. A return to fitness has created a problem over who keeps his place, and CricInformer has learnt which way the management plans to go.
First, the good news: Ishan Kishan has been declared fit and is set to return for the fourth T20I.
He missed the previous two matches after suffering a low-grade right adductor strain in the series opener. His absence gave Vaibhav Sooryavanshi an opportunity, and the youngster made sure his latest performance would be difficult to ignore.
Vaibhav Makes His Case Alongside Abhishek
Vaibhav could not make an impact in his first opportunity of this series. However, he responded in impressive fashion in the third T20I, smashing 45 off just 19 balls alongside Abhishek Sharma.
He hit four fours and four sixes as the pair put together a 133-run opening partnership. Their attack helped India reach 118 without loss in the powerplay and take control of the chase.
The partnership was part of three world-record achievements: India equalled the fastest team fifty in men’s T20Is, reached the fastest team hundred and registered the highest powerplay total.
More than the records, the way Vaibhav combined with Abhishek strengthened the argument for keeping them together. Both attacked from the beginning, leaving New Zealand with little opportunity to control the scoring. That performance showed why this opening combination could offer India even more attacking potential than the Samson-Abhishek pairing.
But Kishan’s return now changes the selection equation.
Ishan Kishan’s Return Creates a Samson or Vaibhav Dilemma
Kishan has been one of India’s most in-form batters this year and among the most productive players in international cricket. His return to the XI is central to India’s plans.
The difficult decision is therefore between Sanju Samson and Vaibhav. Does India retain the youngster after his explosive innings, or restore Samson to his preferred opening position alongside Abhishek?
CricInformer has learnt that the team management will prefer Sanju Samson for the fourth T20I, with Vaibhav making way for Kishan.
The management’s plan is to back Samson as its preferred opener and give him continuity in that role. Vaibhav will continue to receive opportunities, but Samson remains ahead in the current selection order.
Why India Will Continue to Back Samson
Samson’s own recent performances are an important part of that decision. He has scored three half-centuries in his last six matches, giving the management a strong reason to continue with him.
This is therefore a choice between two batters with a case for selection. Vaibhav has just delivered an explosive innings, while Samson has produced runs across a longer stretch of recent matches.
According to the information available to CricInformer, India want to give their senior opener security over his position. The plan is to allow him a consistent run rather than change the opening combination whenever another batter produces a strong performance.
Vaibhav will remain an option when opportunities arise. A significant decline in Samson’s form could change the order, but the management currently intends to keep backing him.
For Vaibhav’s supporters, that means disappointment despite his performance in Wellington. His 45 strengthened his claim, but Kishan’s return and the management’s preference for Samson will push him out of the XI for the next match.
