Ishan Kishan Ruled Out, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to Play 2nd T20I vs New Zealand

India have suffered a major setback just when their opening victory had raised hopes of a successful tour.

After winning the first T20I, it seemed India could build on that momentum. However, a niggle has now sidelined the world’s No. 1 T20I batter and India’s most in-form player ahead of the second match.

Kishan has scored more T20I runs than any other batter this year, making his absence a significant loss. India will now have to adjust their batting lineup as they look to extend their 1-0 lead.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Gets His Opportunity

Kishan’s absence opens the door for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who has been waiting for an opportunity despite performances that make a strong case for his inclusion. India’s top-order batters have been scoring consistently, leaving little room for the youngster.

Sooryavanshi finished IPL 2026 as the tournament’s highest run-scorer, winning the Orange Cap for Rajasthan Royals. He scored 776 runs in 16 matches at an average of 48.50 and an extraordinary strike rate of 237.30. Maintaining that scoring rate across a full season showed the impact he can make.

After a difficult international start against England, he responded strongly against Zimbabwe. Sooryavanshi scored 151 runs in three matches at an average of 50.33 and a strike rate of 196.10, earning the Player of the Series award. His contributions included a maiden T20I fifty in the opener and 81 off 49 balls in the final match.

Those performances showed why he deserves opportunities at international level. Now, he has a chance to test himself against New Zealand in their own conditions and strengthen his claim for a regular place.

India have lost a key batter, but that setback has created an opening for a young player with plenty to offer. The challenge for Sooryavanshi will be to make this opportunity count.

Team India’s Expected Playing XI for the 2nd T20I

  1. Abhishek Sharma
  2. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

  6. Nitish Kumar Reddy
  7. Naman Dhir
