Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka pacer Asitha Fernando were involved in a heated altercation on Day 1 of the 2nd Test between India and Sri Lanka at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo on August 23, 2026. The incident took place in the 17th over of India’s first innings after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal for 45 off 53 balls.
Jaiswal had struck three boundaries in that over before Fernando ended his innings. Fernando gave Jaiswal a send-off following the dismissal, at which point Jaiswal turned back and advanced towards the bowler. The two players exchanged words, clashed heads, and there was a push before Sri Lankan teammates stepped in to separate them. No official ICC or BCCI disciplinary statement was available at the time of reporting.
Why did Manjrekar say Jaiswal crossed the line?
Sanjay Manjrekar, the former India batter and commentator, offered a pointed assessment of the incident. Manjrekar acknowledged that verbal exchanges are a routine part of Test cricket but drew a firm distinction between words and the physical act of advancing towards an opponent after a dismissal.
“The guy (Jaiswal) was on his way to the pavilion when he takes a few steps back and comes close to a fielder. And eventually, I think there was contact with the helmet. Am I right in saying that? I think there was contact. If I were the match referee, I would make a serious note of that. Because, see that contact. Jaiswal is the one who advanced towards the bowler. Whatever was said is part and parcel of the game. Things are said. It is our job as batters to keep our cool. So I find that, on this occasion, Jaiswal crossed the line for sure,” Manjrekar said on Sony Sports Network.
The exact nature of the physical contact between the two players remained unresolved at the time of reporting, with descriptions varying between helmet contact and a push. Whether the match referee initiated a formal Code of Conduct review had also not been confirmed.
How did India perform on Day 1 despite the incident?
The altercation did not derail India’s batting effort on the day. India won the toss and chose to bat, finishing Day 1 at 300 for 5 in their first innings at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo. Devdutt Padikkal was the standout performer, scoring 117 to register his second century of the series. Shubman Gill contributed 50, while Ravindra Jadeja added 43. KL Rahul scored 18 before his dismissal. Fernando was the pick of the Sri Lanka bowlers despite the flashpoint, finishing with figures of 3 for 46.
