Jake Weatherald joins Leicestershire for opening rounds of Championship

Jake Weatherald, Australia’s Ashes-winning opening batter, has joined Leicestershire for the opening block of County Championship fixtures, which the club has confirmed will be captained by Ian Holland, in the ongoing absence of regular captain, Peter Handscomb.

Weatherald, 31, made his Test debut at Perth in November, and went on to play in all five matches of Australia’s 4-1 series win. His opportunity arose after several strong seasons for South Australia and, more recently Tasmania, in the Sheffield Shield, and he arrives at Grace Road with an overall record of 5,784 first-class runs at 36.84 across 85 matches, including 13 centuries.

“I’m absolutely buzzing to join Leicestershire for this first block of the County Championship,” Weatherald said. “It’s my first taste of county cricket, and honestly, I couldn’t be more excited. Everyone I’ve spoken to has talked about how special the county circuit is — the history, the crowds, the grind — and I’m really looking forward to being part of that. I can’t wait to meet the lads, settle in, and hopefully make a real impact for the Foxes.”

Alfonso Thomas, Leicestershire’s head coach, added: “We’re thrilled to have Jake with us … he’s had a brilliant few years and showed during the Ashes that he can perform on the biggest stage. His first class record speaks for itself — he scores runs, he plays positively, and he brings real competitiveness to the top order. We believe he’ll slot straight into the group and make a strong impact on and off the field.”

Leicestershire will be competing in the top flight of the Championship for the first time in 22 years, following last season’s dominant run to the Division Two title. However, they will be missing the services of their captain, Handscomb, who retains his club role after signing a contract extension for 2027, but was this week ruled out of this summer’s campaign for personal reasons.

In his absence, Holland will once again step up, at least for the first block of Championship fixtures, having deputised for Handscomb at the back-end of 2025, when he returned to Australia to prepare for Victoria’s domestic season.

“Ian did a fantastic job leading the side at the back end of last season, and it was clear how naturally he stepped into the role,” Thomas said. “The lads connected with his calmness, professionalism and the standards he sets, which had a really positive impact on the group. He’s earned it, and I’m confident he’ll bring the same energy, clarity and composure that helped us finish last season so well. We’re all right behind him.”

Holland added it was a “real privilege” to step up to the captaincy once more. “I loved taking on the role at the back end of last season,” he said. “It was a challenge I genuinely enjoyed, and it gave me a great feel for the group and how we want to play our cricket.

“To have the chance to lead the lads again is something I’m really proud of. We’ve got a tight-knit squad, full of character and work ethic, and I’m excited to help drive our standards and set the tone early in the campaign.”
