KL Rahul or Ishan Kishan? Irfan Pathan picks India’s first-choice wicketkeeper in ODIs

With the 2027 ODI World Cup gradually coming into focus, one of the biggest selection debates surrounding the Indian team revolves around the wicketkeeper’s position. India have several talented options capable of filling the role, but settling on a regular first-choice player remains crucial if the team hopes to build a stable and balanced combination ahead of the global event. A consistent presence behind the stumps and in the middle order could prove vital as the management looks to finalize its long-term plans.

Irfan Pathan reveals first-choice wicketkeeper for India in ODIs

Although India possess multiple quality wicketkeeper-batters, players like KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson have all made compelling cases with their performances over the years. Choosing between them is far from straightforward. However, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has made his preference clear, naming Rahul as the country’s first-choice wicketkeeper in the 50-over format while also outlining the backup options. Speaking to JioStar, Pathan praised Rahul’s adaptability and reliability in the middle order.

“KL Rahul is India’s first-choice wicketkeeper-batsman in ODIs. He has done well at numbers five and six. He is versatile. As a backup, the selectors have brought in Ishan Kishan. Ishan can bat higher up the order and plays the short ball well square of the wicket. That is a smart selection. So, Rahul and Ishan are the two wicketkeeper-batters right now,” Pathan said.

The former cricketer also highlighted Samson’s credentials, insisting that the Kerala batter deserves to remain firmly in contention.

“The third in line should be Sanju Samson. Whenever he has got a chance, he has delivered. We saw that in the T20 World Cup,” he added.

Experience is the key

Rahul’s ability to anchor an innings while accelerating when required has made him a dependable asset in ODI cricket. His experience batting in different positions, coupled with his calm approach under pressure, has strengthened his claim as India’s preferred wicketkeeper-batter.

Meanwhile, Kishan offers a contrasting style with his aggressive stroke play at the top of the order, providing flexibility depending on team requirements. Samson, too, continues to remain in the mix after making the most of several opportunities in international cricket.

Exit door for Rishabh Pant?

The growing competition could leave Rishabh Pant facing an uphill battle to reclaim a regular ODI spot. Once regarded as India’s undisputed first-choice wicketkeeper across formats, Pant has struggled for consistency in recent times, particularly during IPL 2026, raising questions about his immediate future in the 50-over setup.

However, writing him off entirely would be premature. Pant remains one of India’s most naturally gifted match-winners, and there is still ample time before the 2027 ODI World Cup. Strong performances in domestic cricket and a return to form could quickly put him back into contention.
