The former Australia batter believes the team has all the ingredients to surprise stronger opponents, although he also highlighted a major issue that has repeatedly prevented its potential from translating into consistent results.

The team in question is Pakistan, a side that Hayden knows well from his time as their batting coach. Speaking to The Scoop via Wisden, the former Australian opener praised the remarkable pool of natural talent available to the country. Hayden believes Pakistan possess the kind of athletic ability and cricketing instincts that can make them dangerous against any opposition. Their ability to produce match-winners has ensured that they remain difficult to dismiss, even when their recent results have been underwhelming.
“Pakistan are always dark horses because their natural talent is phenomenal. Anyone who can see athletic ability can see that Pakistan have an abundance of it,” Hayden said.
The 54-year-old’s assessment reflects the unpredictable nature of Pakistan cricket. The side has frequently shown that it can compete with the best when its players click, but maintaining that level over an extended period has proved considerably more difficult.
While Hayden remains convinced about the quality within the squad, he believes Pakistan have struggled to properly harness their talent because of a lack of stability. According to the former Australia batter, talented cricketers need a settled environment, clear direction and consistent support to reach their full potential. He feels Pakistan have too often been surrounded by uncertainty, making it difficult for the team to build momentum.
“The trouble is that their talent never gets focused because it’s never allowed to get focused. It’s always in chaos. They’re always standing on one toe, let alone two feet, so there’s no grounding,” Hayden stated.

Can the ‘dark horses’ find stability?
Pakistan’s recent Test struggles have once again brought the issue of consistency into the spotlight. The team suffered defeats in the opening two matches of its three-Test series against England, forcing the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to make significant changes before the final encounter.
Seven players were released from the touring squad ahead of the third Test in Birmingham, while five uncapped players were included as the board looked for a fresh approach. The match is scheduled to begin on September 9. The coaching structure was also reshaped. Former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed and Umar Gul were removed from their red-ball coaching positions, with white-ball coaching staff members Mike Hesson and Ashley Noffke brought into the setup.
Hayden’s comments suggest that Pakistan’s greatest advantage could also become their biggest frustration. Their wealth of natural talent gives them the ability to surprise any opponent, but converting that potential into sustained success will require greater stability and a clearly defined direction. If the team can create that foundation, Hayden believes Pakistan have enough ability to make a serious impact on the international stage.
