How MS Dhoni’s simple advice transforms Ayush Mhatre as a captain

Meanwhile, Young Chennai Super Kings batter Ayush Mhatre has opened up about one simple piece of advice he got from MS Dhoni that changed everything for him.

Mhatre was still new to captaincy when he was leading India U-19. There was pressure, confusion, and many moments where things didn’t go as planned. Thankfully, he was part of the CSK camp since IPL 2025, where he got the chance to talk to Dhoni and understand how a leader should think.

At that time, Mhatre asked Dhoni, one of the all-time greatest captains the game has ever seen, how to stay in control when the game starts slipping away. Dhoni simply suggested the young leader not take decisions when he is angry or frustrated, and it made a big difference for him.

‘Never make decisions when angry’

Ayush Mhatre said in a video shared by the IPL: “Last year, I got the opportunity to play under Mahi bhai. I was the captain of the India U-19 team at that time. I spoke to him about captaincy after the IPL and asked for his advice, as it was my first time as a captain. He advised me to stay calm on the ground and never make decisions when angry. He said, ‘There will be frustration sometimes due to partnerships by the opposition, but if you stay calm for that short period and just breathe and wait for it to pass, you will be able to make good decisions’.”

Notably, the 18-year-old batting sensation has now become the key part of the CSK setup, and he has so far amassed 171 runs in 5 innings in the ongoing IPL 2026.
