Mumbai Indians have dismissed speculation about bringing Rohit Sharma back as captain, with no discussions held yet about the leadership role for IPL 2027. The franchise is also exploring a potential trade involving Hardik Pandya and remains open to suitable proposals ahead of the retention deadline.
Mumbai Indians have won five IPL titles under Rohit Sharma, making him one of the most successful captains in the franchise’s history. However, the team has struggled to maintain that success in recent seasons, finishing last in 2024 and ninth in 2026, with a Qualifier 2 appearance in between in 2025.
Mumbai Indians Rule Out Rohit Sharma Captaincy Talks
According to a report by NDTV, Mumbai Indians have not started discussions about their captain for IPL 2027. Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma are leading candidates if Hardik leaves, while New Zealand all-rounder Mitchell Santner is also in contention.
Suryakumar led India to the 2026 T20 World Cup title and has captained MI in five IPL matches in Hardik’s absence, winning two and losing three.
However, he scored 270 runs in 13 innings in IPL 2026, fewer than Rohit despite playing four more matches. His loss of place in India’s T20I team may also have affected his captaincy prospects.
Tilak has captained Hyderabad, the South Zone and India A, including a recent assignment in Sri Lanka. He is also India’s T20I vice-captain. Jasprit Bumrah is not being considered because of his injury history.
Hardik Pandya Trade: Rajasthan Royals, CSK and Other Teams in the Frame
Hardik Pandya reportedly considered leaving MI during the previous season, and several franchises showed interest. However, no suitable trade deal has emerged, and he remains part of the squad.
A potential deal with Rajasthan Royals could involve opener Yashasvi Jaiswal moving to MI in exchange for Hardik. Rajasthan would gain a pace-bowling all-rounder, while Jaiswal could open alongside Rohit and become a future captaincy candidate.
However, his arrival could affect Ryan Rickelton, MI’s highest run-scorer last season, and Quinton de Kock, who are also opening options. Signing Jaiswal could create more room for overseas bowlers and all-rounders but leave fewer opportunities for the existing openers.
If Hardik leaves, MI will need a replacement for his pace-bowling all-round skills. Corbin Bosch is an option, but the franchise may seek a more consistent performer.
Chennai Super Kings have reportedly shown interest in an all-cash deal. Delhi Capitals could use a dependable middle-order batter who can bowl pace, while Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants could explore trades involving Cameron Green and Nicholas Pooran, respectively.
Hardik Pandya’s Captaincy Struggles Contrast With Rohit’s MI Legacy
Hardik Pandya returned to MI in a high-profile trade from Gujarat Titans ahead of IPL 2024 after leading GT to the title in 2022. MI finished last in 2024, reached Qualifier 2 in 2025 and ended the 2026 season in ninth place under his leadership.
Rohit Sharma took over as captain midway through IPL 2013 after Ricky Ponting stepped down and immediately led MI to their first title. He went on to guide the franchise to five championships in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020.
He captained MI in 163 matches, winning 93 and losing 70, including two wins and two defeats in Super Overs. His win percentage of 55.82 is bettered only by Sachin Tendulkar among MI captains who have led the team in at least 10 matches.
Rohit’s final season as captain was 2023, when MI reached Qualifier 2 before losing to Hardik-led Gujarat Titans. He was replaced by Hardik ahead of IPL 2024.
