Neena Gupta Calls Saath Saath Her Biggest Mistake
Neena Gupta, who began her film journey in 1982, spoke about her role in Saath Saath, a drama directed by Raman Kumar that also starred Farooq Sheikh and Deepti Naval. In the film, she played a supporting role as a young, bespectacled, “know-it-all” girl with an earnest personality. While the movie gained recognition and did well among audiences, Gupta said that the role inadvertently boxed her into a certain typecast.
Recalling the aftermath of the film’s release, Neena said that a fellow actor-director, Girish Karnad, whom she knew from her days at the National School of Drama, offered her a blunt warning at the movie’s premiere party. According to her, Karnad told her that because of the kind of part she had played, she would struggle to secure traditional heroine roles going forward, and in her experience, that is exactly what happened. She revealed Karnad said, “‘Now you’re finished. You’ll never get a heroine role.’ And that’s exactly what happened.”
Neena Gupta On Not Reciving Main Stream Roles
Drawing from her experience, Neena offered practical advice to young actors, especially women who aspire to be leading heroines. She suggested that choosing certain types of roles too soon can anchor perceptions in the public and industry, making it harder to be cast in varied, glamorous, or traditional heroine roles later on.
Despite the challenges that followed, Neena Gupta went on to build a respected body of work over the decades, with a significant resurgence after critically acclaimed roles in films like Badhaai Ho and popular web series such as Panchayatand is now all set for her new thriller Vadh 2 opposite Sanjay Mishra. Her story illustrates the nonlinear nature of success in show business and highlights how early career choices can have lasting effects.
Neena Gupta’s reflections serve as both a caution and a lesson: while an actor’s first role can make an impression, it does not define their entire journey, and learning how to navigate the industry’s perceptions is as important as talent itself.
