NZ pacer Duffy on scouting Sooryavanshi ahead of T20Is

New Zealand have prepared detailed plans to counter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi ahead of the five-match T20 series beginning on Thursday at Christchurch’s Hagley Oval. The 15-year-old Indian opener has made a significant impact in international cricket since his debut in July, establishing himself as one of the game’s most aggressive young batters. Sooryavanshi made his T20 international debut on July 4 against England and became India’s youngest international in the men’s game. New Zealand’s bowling unit has studied Sooryavanshi’s approach and tactical vulnerabilities in the build-up to the series.

Jacob Duffy, the New Zealand pacer, confirmed on Tuesday that his team has conducted thorough analysis of the teenage sensation. Duffy told reporters that the preparation extends beyond basic video review, with the squad developing specific strategies to challenge Sooryavanshi during the upcoming matches. The New Zealand bowler spoke to the media on October 20, 2026, ahead of the opening match at Hagley Oval.

“First of all, he’s an incredible talent. Obviously, he’s taken the IPL by storm and what’s amazing, he strikes it so hard but he does it so consistently. He’s striking at 250 (strike-rate) every game and he’s ‌not missing out very often. So that’s incredible in itself. I think he played in England, so conditions will be a little bit different for him, so that’s obviously one thing for him to be challenged with. We’ve certainly had a good scouting session on him and got our plans as to what we want to do to him,” said Duffy as quoted by The Indian Express.

Sooryavanshi’s T20 international record stands at 246 runs across 8 matches at an average of 30.75, with a strike rate of 186.36. The left-handed opener achieved a milestone in July when he became the youngest player to register a half-century in men’s international cricket, scoring 50 runs off just 18 deliveries against Zimbabwe. His aggressive batting approach has drawn attention from opposition teams preparing for the series.

Duffy elaborated on New Zealand’s scouting efforts and the specific challenges Sooryavanshi presents to the bowling attack. The pacer highlighted the teenager’s consistency and the need to adapt to different conditions.

“He’s from ‌Invercargill, so he’s promised me a little bit of bounce. As long as it’s not Hyderabad, I’m happy,” said Duffy.
