OnePlus 16 could get a major camera upgrade

The OnePlus 16 could be shaping up to deliver one of the biggest camera upgrades the series has seen in years. However, the hardware improvements may arrive alongside the end of one of the brand’s most recognisable features.

According to reports from Smartprix, citing a “highly reliable” industry insider, OnePlus is preparing a significant camera overhaul for its next flagship. At the same time, the report claims Oppo is planning to retire OxygenOS in favour of a unified version of ColorOS, further bringing OnePlus in line with its parent company.

The biggest rumoured change concerns the main camera. Well-known leaker Digital Chat Station claims the OnePlus 16 will swap the OnePlus 15‘s 50MP 1/1.56-inch main sensor for a much larger 200MP 1/1.4-inch sensor. If that happens, it could offer better low-light performance alongside the obvious boost in resolution.

The rest of the camera system doesn’t appear to be changing as dramatically. The 50MP ultra-wide camera and the 3.5x telephoto lens are both expected to return largely unchanged. However, the leaker stresses that the final hardware hasn’t been locked in yet.

While the camera upgrades are grabbing the headlines, the software changes could prove just as significant.

The report claims Oppo is phasing out both OxygenOS and Realme UI, replacing them with ColorOS across future devices. OxygenOS has long been one of OnePlus’ biggest selling points, earning a reputation as one of Android’s fastest and cleanest interfaces. Therefore, its disappearance would mark another step in the brand’s gradual shift away from the identity that originally made it popular.

The report also notes that Oppo has already begun consolidating OnePlus operations in some markets. In India, for example, OnePlus service has been merged under the Oppo brand. This suggests the two companies are becoming increasingly intertwined.

As with any early leak, there’s still plenty of uncertainty. Digital Chat Station notes that the OnePlus 16’s camera specifications are not yet final. Meanwhile, Smartprix also suggests it’s possible the phone may not launch outside China, depending on Oppo’s broader strategy.

For now, though, the OnePlus 16 looks set to be a much bigger upgrade behind the camera than elsewhere. This is assuming it makes it to global markets at all.
