The PMC standing committee on Thursday approved a proposal to widen the road from Bindumadhav Thackeray Chowk to Sangamwadi and Ambedkar Chowk in Yerawada from 20 metres to 30 metres despite an objection from Deccan College.
Committee chairperson Srinath Bhimale said Deccan College had filed an objection regarding the proposed road widening.
The objection was heard before the Municipal Commissioner on March 13, 2026. After hearing the representatives of the trust, the Municipal Commissioner rejected the objection stating that the proposed road width was necessary in the interest of the public.
The administration had sought the approval of the standing committee to fix the road width at 30 metres. Once the road width is fixed, the necessary land acquisition, plan approval and development work will be done, he said.
The decision is expected to benefit citizens traveling to and from Yerawada, Sangamwadi, Vimannagar, Pune Station and Nagar Road areas the most. Currently, there isheavy traffic on this road, which often causes traffic jams.
The municipal administration says the long-term development of this route will gain momentum as necessary planning to expand the road can be done now considering the increasing traffic.
