Former India leg-spinner Sairaj Bahutule is reportedly set to join Team India, as their new spin-bowling coach following the conclusion of IPL 2026. The move is believed to be part of the BCCI’s plans to further strengthen the support staff under head coach Gautam Gambhir ahead of a packed international schedule across formats.
Bahutule is currently serving as the spin-bowling coach of Punjab Kings (PBKS) during IPL 2026 and has been working closely with the franchise’s spin unit throughout the season. Reports suggest his work during the tournament has impressed the Indian team management, leading to discussions regarding a possible role with the senior national side.
Sairaj Bahutule’s experience strengthens India’s coaching setup
Bahutule brings extensive coaching experience at both domestic and franchise levels. Before joining Punjab Kings, he worked with Rajasthan Royals (RR) and was also associated with the National Cricket Academy (NCA), where he played an important role in developing young Indian cricketers.
He has also worked with India A sides and several domestic teams over the years, earning recognition for his technical understanding of spin bowling and his ability to mentor younger players. His calm approach and tactical awareness have made him a respected figure within Indian cricket circles.
Apart from coaching, Bahutule also enjoyed a successful domestic playing career and represented India in two Tests and one ODI during the late 1990s and early 2000s. His experience as a former leg-spinner is expected to add valuable insight to India’s current spin-bowling group.
Bahutule expected to play key role in India’s spin plans
India’s spin attack continues to be one of the team’s biggest strengths across formats, with players like Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel playing major roles in recent years. The addition of a dedicated spin-bowling coach could help the team further refine its strategies, especially during overseas assignments and major ICC tournaments.
With India preparing for several important bilateral series and global events in the coming months, reports suggest the management is keen on building a specialised support system around the squad. Bahutule’s experience in handling both senior and emerging players is believed to be one of the major reasons behind the expected appointment.
Punjab Kings spin coach impresses during IPL 2026
While Bahutule remains fully focused on his responsibilities with Punjab Kings for the remainder of IPL 2026, his expected move to the national setup has already created considerable buzz in cricket circles. Punjab’s spin bowlers have shown noticeable improvement this season, further strengthening Bahutule’s reputation as a highly regarded coach.
The development also reflects the growing trend of successful IPL and domestic coaches transitioning into bigger roles within the Indian team setup. With the BCCI continuing to focus on continuity and long-term planning, Bahutule’s expected inclusion could add further depth to India’s coaching structure ahead of a crucial phase in international cricket.
