Shubman Gill’s Big Mistake Costs India the Match Against West Indies

India lost a match against West Indies that they had a genuine chance of winning in the final three overs. Despite setting a huge target of 352, India eventually lost with 10 balls remaining, and one tactical decision from captain Shubman Gill proved extremely costly at the most crucial stage of the contest.

The match had reached a very interesting position after 47 overs. West Indies needed 29 runs from the final 18 balls. Shai Hope was well set but had already played a long innings, while Gudakesh Motie was struggling to time the ball consistently.

India had an opportunity to put West Indies under serious pressure.

More importantly, Gill still had Mohammed Siraj available.

Both Siraj and debutant Anshul Kamboj had two overs each remaining, which gave the Indian captain a clear choice for the crucial 48th over.

Surprisingly, Gill chose Kamboj.

That decision changed the match completely.

Why Siraj Looked Like the Better Option

Until that stage, Siraj had been India’s most reliable fast bowler in the match. He had conceded 52 runs from eight overs and had also dismissed John Campbell, one of West Indies’ most dangerous and in-form batters.

Beyond the figures, Siraj had something even more important for this situation: international experience.

He has bowled in pressure situations for India on numerous occasions and was maintaining a better line and length than India’s other pacers on the day.

Kamboj’s situation was completely different.

He was making his ODI debut and had already conceded around 60 runs from his first eight overs. He had struggled with his control and was yet to take a wicket.

With 29 required from 18 balls, India did not necessarily need a wicket immediately. They primarily needed a tight over that would push the required rate even higher and transfer all the pressure back onto West Indies.

That made Gill’s decision even more surprising.

Anshul Kamboj’s 48th Over Turns the Match

Gill handed Kamboj the ball for the 48th over, and West Indies immediately sensed an opportunity.

The first two deliveries produced singles, but the third delivery became the major turning point.

Under pressure, Kamboj bowled a no-ball that resulted in five runs and also gave West Indies a free hit.

The pressure India had built over the previous overs disappeared almost instantly.

West Indies attacked Kamboj from there, and the complete sequence of the over read:

1, 1, 5nb, 4, 1, 4, 6

A massive 22 runs came from the 48th over.

Just one over earlier, West Indies required 29 from 18 balls and India were very much alive in the contest. After Kamboj’s over, almost the entire equation had disappeared.

That was effectively the moment the match slipped away from India.

Kamboj finished his debut with expensive figures of 0/82 from nine overs.

Gill’s Tactical Decision Proves Costly

This is why Gill’s decision deserves attention.

It was not simply a case of a bowler having one expensive over. The situation before the over also mattered.

Gill had an experienced international fast bowler in Siraj available. Siraj had bowled better than India’s other pacers on the day, had already taken the wicket of Campbell and still had two overs remaining.

At the other end of the choice was a debutant who was already having a difficult outing and had never previously faced this kind of pressure at international level.

Yet Gill chose Kamboj for arguably the most important over of the match.

The result was devastating for India.

West Indies went from needing 29 off 18 balls to being in complete control after collecting 22 runs from a single over. They eventually completed the chase at 352/5 in 48.2 overs, with 10 balls still remaining.

India’s defeat had more than one contributing factor, but when the game reached its decisive stage, they still had an opportunity to win it. The choice of bowler for the 48th over was therefore crucial.

Siraj was available. He had the experience. He had bowled well enough to be trusted with the pressure over.

Instead, Gill backed Kamboj, and the debutant could not handle the pressure. Those 22 runs in the 48th over turned a tense finish into a comfortable West Indies victory.
