Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has filed a formal written complaint at Thakurpukur Police Station in Kolkata after he and his wife Dona received a series of death threat letters spanning the past six months. The complaint was lodged on Monday, August 10, 2026, the same day the most recent threatening letter was opened at the Bengal cricket president’s office.
The latest letter, composed entirely in English, carried explicit language threatening to eliminate or finish Ganguly and his family. Earlier communications in the series had been treated as correspondence from overzealous fans, but the increasingly menacing tone of the most recent letter prompted the family to approach law enforcement with a formal complaint.
Each letter arrived via courier at the Ganguly household, with the sender identified as Arun Kumar, listed as a resident of Belgharia. Investigators traced a phone number included in the letter, and a Truecaller search returned the same name. Police are now working to determine whether the actual Arun Kumar dispatched the letters or whether a third party has been misusing his identity to send the threats.
What steps have police and authorities taken after the complaint?
Following the registration of the complaint, police confirmed that a formal investigation is under way. Officers are focused on establishing the true identity of the sender and tracing the origin of the courier letters, treating the matter as a serious security concern given Ganguly’s standing as a prominent public figure.
“I wish to bring to your kind attention a matter of serious concern regarding certain threatening letters that have been received by Mr. Sourav Ganguly and his family.”
“However, today we have received two letters addressed to Mr. Sourav Ganguly and Mrs. Dona Ganguly, in which the sender has not only made hate remarks against Mr. Ganguly but has also issued serious threats to the life and safety of Mr. Ganguly, Mrs. Dona Ganguly and the people working [with/for] him.”
“The nature of the threats contained in the letters has caused serious concern among us. Since the letters have now escalated from hate/derogatory communication to explicit threats to life and personal safety, we believe that the matter requires immediate police intervention and investigation,” read the statement on the complaint.
The state government’s security department was notified and directed to respond without delay. That department is currently assessing whether Ganguly’s existing security arrangements need to be strengthened in light of the sustained nature of the threats. No additional security measures have been publicly confirmed at this stage.

“We have started an investigation and are taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of Mr. Ganguly and his family,” police officials told Ganguly’s PA in response to the complaint lodged.
Ganguly captained India and subsequently served as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, making him one of the country’s most recognisable cricket administrators. He currently holds the position of Bengal cricket president, and it was at that office on August 10, 2026, that the latest threatening letter came to light.
