Andhra Pradesh Minister for Youth Services, Sports and Transport M. Ramprasad Reddy has said that sports play a crucial role in shaping physically fit, mentally resilient and socially responsible individuals, and reaffirmed the State government’s commitment to promoting sports and supporting sportspersons.
The Minister was speaking on the third day of the VIT-AP 1st Amaravati International FIDE Rating Chess Tournament 2026, where players competed in the sixth round of the championship.
He lauded VIT-AP University for successfully organising an international-standard chess tournament and providing a valuable platform for emerging talent from across the country.
Appreciating the discipline, concentration and strategic thinking displayed by the participants, Mr. Reddy said chess not only enhances intellectual abilities but also strengthens decision-making skills and mental endurance. He noted that Andhra Pradesh aspires to become a leading destination for chess and other sporting disciplines.
The Minister highlighted the vision of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu in bringing reputed educational institutions to Amaravati and said these efforts had helped transform the capital region into a major educational hub capable of hosting international-level academic and sporting events.
Referring to the recent recruitment of nearly 400 teachers through the DSC sports quota, Mr. Reddy described it as a significant step towards encouraging athletes and recognising sporting excellence.
VIT-AP University Vice-Chancellor P. Arulmozhivarman said the university is committed to promoting excellence in both academics and sports.
Andhra Chess Association Chairman K.V.V. Sharma appreciated VIT-AP University’s support in promoting chess.
VIT-AP Registrar Jagadish Chandra Mudiganti, Deputy Director (Student Welfare) Khadeer Pasha, Andhra Chess Association President Suresh and Secretary Jagadish were present.
