Suresh Raina has always appreciated players who bring aggression and personality to their cricket, and his latest choice reflects that preference. The former India batter recently spoke highly of one of the country’s most dynamic stars, highlighting the qualities that have made him such an influential figure in Test cricket.
Sureash Raina names his current favourite Indian Test cricketer
Speaking on Aakash Chopra’s YouTube channel, Raina revealed that Rishabh Pant is his favourite player in the current Indian setup. His admiration for the wicketkeeper-batter goes beyond his numbers, with Raina particularly impressed by Pant’s determination and the way he has handled the challenges of his career. Raina praised Pant’s hard work while acknowledging the impact he has continued to make in the longest format.
“He has worked hard. I am very happy. Everyone does well, but he is one of the best. He is my favourite player. He is scoring a lot in Tests. He has that X factor,” said Raina.
The former India international’s comments underline just how highly he rates Pant among the current generation of Indian cricketers.
Star player’s impact in Test cricket stands out
Pant has established a reputation for playing Test cricket in a manner that few wicketkeeper-batters have managed before. Rather than simply focusing on survival, he has regularly looked to put pressure back on the opposition. His aggressive approach can change the momentum of a match within a short period. Even when India find themselves under pressure, Pant has shown the ability to counterattack and force opponents to rethink their plans.
That quality appears to be one of the major reasons behind Raina’s admiration. The former India star specifically pointed towards Pant’s impressive run-scoring in Test cricket and his ability to produce decisive contributions when the situation demands it.
For Raina, however, statistics only tell part of the story. It is Pant’s instinctive style and ability to produce something unexpected that truly sets him apart. Pant has often taken risks that other batters might hesitate to attempt, particularly when facing high-quality bowling. His willingness to attack has made him one of the most entertaining players in the Indian team while also giving India a potentially match-changing weapon lower down the order.

Raina backs the wicketkeeper-batter for white-ball growth
Although Pant has earned considerable praise for his performances in Test cricket, Raina believes there is still another level he can reach in white-ball cricket. Raina suggested that Pant can continue to mature in ODIs, T20 cricket and the IPL. The former India batter appears confident that the experience Pant has accumulated in the red-ball format can help him become an even more complete limited-overs player.
“I think he will mature in white-ball and IPL as well. He has done really well,” added Raina.
For Pant, the challenge will be to translate his considerable talent and Test success into sustained performances across formats. If he can do that, his already significant influence on Indian cricket could grow even further.
