Suryakumar Yadav’s Mumbai Indians future sealed for IPL 2027

Suryakumar Yadav is set to continue with Mumbai Indians for the 2027 Indian Premier League season despite his underwhelming campaign in the previous edition. According to a report by the Times of India, the five-time champions are not looking to part ways with the experienced batter and see him as an important part of their plans going forward.

There had been some speculation around Suryakumar’s future following his poor returns in IPL 2026 and his recent removal as India’s T20I captain. However, MI are understood to be backing the batter and are prioritizing continuity ahead of the 2027 season. The franchise is expected to make changes to its leadership, but Suryakumar Yadav’s place in the squad is not under threat.

Suryakumar Yadav set to stay with Mumbai Indians for IPL 2027

The Times of India report states that Mumbai Indians are not considering releasing Suryakumar Yadav after just one disappointing season. A source close to the franchise explained that MI’s approach is not to discard an established player based on a single campaign, with the team’s ‘One Family’ philosophy also playing a role in the decision.

Suryakumar Yadav had a difficult IPL 2026 season, scoring 270 runs in 13 innings for Mumbai Indians. He averaged 20.76 and struck at 147.54, with two fifties. Despite those numbers, the franchise appears willing to look beyond one season and retain its experienced campaigner for IPL 2027.

The report also indicates that continuity remains the priority for Mumbai Indians ahead of the upcoming season. While a major reset could be considered for the next cycle, the franchise is not believed to be in a hurry to make sweeping changes for 2027.

Suryakumar Yadav’s performance for Mumbai Indians in IPL

Suryakumar Yadav has been an important batter for Mumbai Indians since joining the franchise in 2018. Across 179 IPL matches, he has scored 4,581 runs at an average of 33.68 and a strike rate of 148.58, including two centuries and 31 fifties.

His year-wise numbers show that he enjoyed several highly productive seasons with MI. He scored 512 runs in 2018, followed by 424 in 2019 and 480 in the 2020/21 season. He then accumulated 317 runs in 2021 and 303 in 2022.

Suryakumar’s great season for Mumbai came in 2023, when he smashed 605 runs. He followed it with 345 runs in 2024 and produced an even stronger campaign in 2025, finishing with 717 runs in 16 innings at an average of 65.18 and a strike rate of 167.91.

However, his numbers dropped significantly in 2026, with 270 runs from 13 innings. MI will now hope that the experienced batter can rediscover his consistency in 2027.

Suryakumar Yadav’s record as Mumbai Indians captain

He has captained Mumbai Indians in five T20 matches, winning two and losing three. That gives him a 40% win percentage as MI captain. His captaincy stint is considerably smaller than that of Rohit Sharma, who remains the franchise’s most successful leader.

Rohit captained Mumbai Indians in 163 T20 matches (IPL + CLT20), winning 91 and losing 68, while four matches ended tied. His win percentage was 55.82%, and he guided MI to five IPL titles.

Overall, 10 players have captained Mumbai Indians in T20 cricket, including Sachin Tendulkar, Hardik Pandya, Harbhajan Singh, Kieron Pollard, Ricky Ponting, Shaun Pollock, Dwayne Bravo and Jasprit Bumrah.
