The post-poll alliance led by the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in Tamil Nadu, comprising the Congress, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), has been named the Secular Social Justice Victory Alliance (SSJVA).
At the second meeting of the alliance partners at the TVK headquarters in Panaiyur on the outskirts of Chennai on Wednesday, the alliance was formally given the name. TVK president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has been named the chairperson of the alliance. It has been decided that the alliance partners will work together both in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
After the meeting, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president Manickam Tagore, IUML national president K.M. Khader Mohideen, VCK founder-president Thol. Thirumavalavan and MDMK leader Vaiko, along with TVK senior leaders and Ministers Aadhav Arjuna and K.G. Arunraj, addressed a joint press conference announcing the name of the alliance.
Mr. Tagore said candidates, on behalf of the alliance, for the upcoming bypolls to Madurantakam and Dharapuram would be announced on Thursday. Describing the alliance as a strong ideological formation, he said efforts would be made to bring more parties into it and a Common Minimum Programme would also be drafted.
Mr. Thirumavalavan said secularism and social justice were the two core ideologies of the alliance and that the formation was opposed to communal forces. Mr. Vaiko said district-level alliance coordination meetings would be held.
To a question on who would be the Prime Ministerial candidate for the 2029 Lok Sabha election, Mr. Tagore said the parties currently part of the SSJVA were also constituents of the INDIA bloc at the national level. The TVK would become part of the INDIA bloc once it had an MP. The Prime Ministerial candidate of the INDIA bloc would be announced closer to the 2029 Lok Sabha election and Mr. Vijay would campaign for the candidate, Mr. Tagore said.
The parties now in the SSJVA were part of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance during the 2026 Assembly election. They joined hands with the TVK after the declaration of the election results, in which the TVK fell short of a majority.
