The TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, match no.33, was between the two most successful franchises, the Mumbai Indians (MI), who took on the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Wankhede Stadium. The fans came in large numbers for the crucial clash. This was the first MI vs CSK match without MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma in the playing XI.
CSK beat MI by 103 runs. It was a resounding win for the Men in Yellow. MI captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and elected to field first. The five-time winners played the same team of the win against in their last match against the Gujarat Titans. CSK made changes with Ayush Mhatre ruled out, Akeal Hosein and Kartik Sharma coming in.

After being invited to bat first, Sanju Samson had a steady start with Ruturaj Gaikwad scoring aggressively, and the CSK skipper scored a valuable 22 runs off 14 balls. Sanju then took over and charged with their scoring at a good pace. Then, some short innings from Sarfaraz Khan and Dewald Brevis as they scored 14 and 21 runs respectively.
Sanju brought up his second fifty of IPL 2026 in 26 balls, and Kartik Sharma yet again disappointed as he was dismissed on the score of 18 runs. However, Smason stayed till the end and scored a brilliant century and helped Chennai to go past the 200 run mark as they scored 207/6 with Sanju being unbeaten with a score of 101* runs.
Coming out to chase, MI had a horrible start as they lost three wickets inside two overs, with the score being 11/3 and Akeal Hosein picking two wickets in his first two overs. The first wicket to fall was Danish Malewar for a golden duck, and then it was Quinton de Kock who was dismissed by Mukesh Choudhary, and again Hosein struck as Naman Dhir departed.
MI could get only to 29/3 in the power play, which was a brilliant bowling display from the Chennai bowlers. It was their lowest total in power play in IPL 2026. Then Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma stitched a partnership of 73 runs as the latter was dismissed on the score of 37 runs, as Akeal picked his third of the match.
The Mumbai side went down like nine pins as they lost four wickets in the span of four runs, after the loss of Suryakumar Yadav, who was the second-highest scorer with 36 runs, and the wickets kept falling for the five-time winners. Shardul Thakur, who came in as a concussion substitute for Mitchell Santner, could only score 6 runs as MI were bowled out for 104 runs.
