India have almost finalised their playing XI for the second T20I against West Indies, scheduled for October 9 in Ranchi. The biggest question ahead of the match is whether Sanju Samson will retain his opening position or teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will finally get an opportunity. Despite Samson’s disappointing recent performances and growing demands for Sooryavanshi’s inclusion, the Indian team management appears to have already made its decision.
India registered a comfortable eight-wicket victory in the opening T20I, but Samson once again failed to make an impact. His continued struggles have intensified the debate over whether India should persist with him or give the talented Sooryavanshi a chance.
Sanju Samson’s Poor Form Puts His Place Under Pressure
There is a strong reason why the Indian team management continues to back Sanju Samson. The wicketkeeper-batter played a crucial role in India’s World Cup triumph, producing match-winning performances in three consecutive knockout matches.
However, his performances since the tournament have been disappointing. Apart from a couple of impressive knocks against Afghanistan on batting-friendly surfaces, Samson has struggled to score consistently.
In his last four T20I appearances, Samson has registered scores of 9, 7, 2 and 11, meaning he has failed to cross even 11 runs in any of those matches.
His latest failure came in the first T20I against West Indies, where he managed just 11 runs before being dismissed.
Naturally, this has frustrated several Indian cricket fans, who believe that a player of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s calibre should not continue warming the bench while an out-of-form batter receives repeated opportunities.
Sooryavanshi has already demonstrated his extraordinary talent with aggressive batting and consistent performances. He was named Player of the Tournament at the World Cup and also impressed during India’s gold-medal-winning campaign at the 2026 Asian Games.
His ability to dominate bowlers from the beginning makes him an attractive opening option alongside Abhishek Sharma.
Gautam Gambhir and Team Management Have Made Their Decision
According to CricInformer’s information and indications from India’s preparations, Sanju Samson is set to retain his opening position for the second T20I against West Indies.
Despite his recent failures, the team management is not planning to drop him immediately.
Head coach Gautam Gambhir has been keen to give Samson sufficient opportunities, particularly considering his match-winning contributions during India’s World Cup campaign.
The thinking within the team management is that a player who delivered in such high-pressure knockout matches deserves a longer run rather than being dropped after a few disappointing performances.
Samson was preferred over Sooryavanshi in the opening T20I, and the same approach is expected to continue in Ranchi.
However, the second T20I could become particularly important for Samson. Another failure may increase the pressure on the team management to consider Sooryavanshi for the remaining matches.
For now, the young left-hander appears set to miss out again, despite his impressive recent performances and strong claims for selection.
Prince Yadav Could Replace Mayank Yadav
Apart from the opening combination, India are considering one possible change in their fast-bowling department.
Prince Yadav remains an option to replace Mayank Yadav, who struggled with his bowling in the opening T20I.
Prince has been part of India’s recent T20I plans and has shown enough promise to deserve consideration. Meanwhile, Mayank returned to the national setup after receiving opportunities during a period when several established players were rested.
However, the chances of this change remain relatively low.
Having already won the opening match convincingly, India are unlikely to disturb their winning combination unnecessarily. The team management is expected to back the same group of players for at least one more game.

There is an outside chance of Prince Yadav replacing Mayank Yadav, but Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will once again have to sit out.
