The 2026-27 Sheffield Shield season has got off to an action-packed start, with the opening day of the domestic campaign producing several impressive performances and moments of brilliance. Defending champions South Australia made their intentions clear early on as they battled Victoria at the Junction Oval, but it was Nathan McAndrew who stole the spotlight with a remarkable piece of fielding.
The South Australia pacer showcased exceptional awareness and lightning-fast reflexes to run out Victoria debutant Liam Blackford. McAndrew’s effort came off his own bowling and perfectly demonstrated the sharpness and intensity that the Redbacks have brought into the new season.
Nathan McAndrew pulls off spectacular run-out
Blackford was enjoying a promising start to his first-class career after receiving his debut cap from former Australia captain Aaron Finch. The young wicketkeeper-batter had settled nicely at the crease and contributed 27 runs before an extraordinary moment brought his innings to an abrupt end.
Facing McAndrew, Blackford struck a firm straight drive that appeared destined to race past the bowler. However, McAndrew reacted almost instantly, sticking out his right hand and managing to stop the ball during his follow-through. Blackford had already stepped out of his crease in anticipation of taking a run, leaving himself vulnerable.
McAndrew then completed the remarkable piece of fielding in one swift movement. After stopping the powerful drive, he gathered the ball and immediately threw it towards the striker’s stumps. His throw was perfectly accurate, hitting the wickets directly before Blackford could make it safely back into his crease.
The stunning dismissal left the commentators impressed and quickly became one of the standout moments from the opening day. McAndrew’s combination of awareness, reflexes and accuracy turned what looked like a routine defensive shot into a spectacular run-out.

South Australia keep Victoria under pressure
The defending champions enjoyed a productive day with the ball as they repeatedly put Victoria’s batting lineup under pressure. Henry Thornton was among the standout performers during the early stages, using his pace and accuracy to remove key batters and put the hosts on the back foot.
Thornton dismissed Ollie Peake for 32 before accounting for Matthew Short, who made 31. South Australia’s bowlers continued to chip away at the Victorian batting order, with Ben Manenti also getting among the wickets by removing Fergus O’Neill for 24.
McAndrew’s run-out of Blackford followed shortly afterwards, further strengthening South Australia’s grip on the contest. Victoria found themselves struggling to build a substantial first-innings total as wickets continued to fall at regular intervals.

Victoria’s lower order stages a fightback
Just when South Australia appeared on course to bowl Victoria out for a modest score, the hosts’ lower order produced a crucial resistance. Debutant Harry Hoekstra showed impressive composure on his first-class bow, putting together a valuable innings alongside Doug Warren.
The pair frustrated the South Australian attack with a determined 62-run partnership for the ninth wicket. Warren contributed 20, while Hoekstra remained unbeaten at the end of the day’s play, helping Victoria reach 244 for nine.
Brendan Doggett eventually ended the stubborn resistance by claiming a late wicket with the second new ball, but Victoria had managed to recover significantly from their earlier struggles.
South Australia then had a brief opportunity to bat before stumps. New signing Jake Weatherald opened the innings but could not make an impact, falling for a duck. Hoekstra capped a memorable debut by claiming Weatherald’s wicket, leaving South Australia at 4/1 at the close of play.
With Victoria finishing on 244/9 and South Australia losing an early wicket, the contest remains finely balanced heading into the second day.
