WATCH: Shreyas Iyer Century Powers India to Massive T20I Win

Captain Shreyas Iyer produced a batting masterclass at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, powering India to a commanding eight-wicket win over West Indies in the first T20I. Chasing a target of 172, Iyer led from the front with an unbeaten 102 off just 43 deliveries, finishing the contest with 32 balls to spare.

Shreyas Iyer Century Rewrites Record Books in Lucknow

The innings marked Shreyas Iyer’s maiden century in T20 international cricket. It also created history, making him the first Indian captain to score a hundred while chasing in a T20I. Prior to this knock, the highest score by an Indian skipper in a T20I chase belonged to Virat Kohli, who made 94 not out against the same opposition in Hyderabad back in 2019.

Iyer joined an elite group of Indian captains with T20I hundreds, standing alongside Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav. However, all four previous centuries by Indian captains had come while batting first. Reaching the three-figure mark in a run-chase adds a unique milestone to Iyer’s growing leadership resume.

Smart Spin Play Followed by Sheer Power

Known for his strong technique against spin bowling, Iyer paced his innings with great tactical awareness. India faced early pressure in the chase after losing both openers, Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, inside the powerplay. Iyer walked in and immediately calmed the nerves, reading the conditions and playing cautiously through the initial phase.

He initially relied on sharp running between the wickets, crisp placements, and conventional boundaries to rotate the strike. Iyer reached his half-century in 28 balls, laying a stable platform for the team. Once he found his rhythm, he completely changed gears.

After crossing fifty, the Indian captain completely changed gears and launched a brutal attack on the West Indies bowlers. He smashed 10 fours and 6 sixes, turning the run chase into a one-sided affair. After reaching his fifty, he needed just 14 more balls to score his next 50 runs, completing his maiden T20I century in only 42 balls. The Caribbean bowling attack had no answers as boundaries continued to flow from his bat.

Finishing the Chase in Style

Iyer brought up his century in just 42 deliveries by launching a six over long-on off Roston Chase in the 15th over. This made it the fastest T20I hundred by an Indian batter against West Indies, eclipsing KL Rahul’s 46-ball effort in Lauderhill from 2016.

Ishan Kishan provided solid support at the other end with an unbeaten 37 off 27 deliveries. Together, the pair shared an unbroken 137-run partnership for the third wicket. India comfortably crossed the finish line in 14.4 overs, posting 175 for 2.

The Ekana Stadium has previously witnessed memorable Indian knocks, including Rohit Sharma’s unbeaten 111 against West Indies in 2018. Iyer’s dominant hundred continues that strong record in Lucknow, putting India 1-0 up in the five-match series.
