Why Didn’t Rishabh Pant Bat Against CSK?

That Friday night under lights, Rishabh Pant stayed off the field when Lucknow needed runs. Though three quick wickets fell, he never walked in to bat. A long opening stand had set the stage – Marsh and Inglis put together 135 before things unraveled. Even then, at Ekana Stadium, Pant remained idle. He’s always batted at No.4 or higher through this tournament. Yet here, after Samad got out, there was no sign of him stepping up.

While he was not needed much after Marsh had dwarfed the 188-run target with his blistering 90 from 38 balls, Pant stated that his decision not to bat was due to ‘respecting some things for the think tank’. “See, I was ready to bat, and the idea came up,” Pant told broadcasters at the post-match presentation. “I was in the dressing room. The idea came in: why not try players who have not played much, they haven’t got much chances, and that was the idea. I was thinking again and again, should I do it or not, because I still wanted to be out there in the field. But you know, sometimes you have to respect some things for the think tank.”

Pant Stays at Number Four or Higher
Luck ran out for the LSG captain when rain stopped play before his turn. He usually settles into position three, takes four sometimes, even led off once. Eleven chances so far, yet never dropped past four in the lineup. Seven appearances at three, three at four – that pattern held firm till now.

Pant opens up about juggling too many thoughts at once
Opening things up, LSG cycled through options until landing on Marsh alongside Josh Inglis – he missed early games for private matters. That shift came after testing Marsh with Aiden Markram upfront, a pairing that fizzled since the South African skipper struggled for runs throughout. The new set hasn’t looked back lately.

For sure, right off the bat, pairing two international players up front – yeah, that was the plan. Nicky slotted into three, just like they wanted. Thing is, ideas like that do not always land cleanly during matches. Still, there is belief within the group. Confidence runs deep, even when things shift on the field.

“The only thing I would say is, it’s frustrating when you know what you have as a team, just because of little thought process here and there, and you can’t implement things the way you want, things can happen,” Pant said on the opening combination. “The only thing that can harm us is having too many thought processes.”

Still, following that earlier Super Over defeat by KKR, Pant repeated his point – too many voices complicate things during play – when questioned about choices made mid-game.
